IF YOU LOVE ‘RUNNING POINT,’ TRY THESE FUN FILMS AND TV SHOWS

If you’re a binge watcher and love to do this with all the latest and greatest hyped titles, well the, sometimes we run out of (too quickly) stories we love. One of the titles currently enjoying lots of hype and success is Running Point. A Netflix comedy that also returns a familiar face to a lead role, let’s take a look as some films and TV watchalikes if you like Running Point, try these.

LIST | CELEBRATE IRELAND WITH THESE IRISH MOVIES TO WATCH

In case you are unfamiliar with the recent release, in the comedy, from Mindy Kaling, Kate Hudson plays Isla Gordon, a smart, but overlooked “middle child” in the Gordon family. She’s also the only girl. When the family business and legacy is threatened, it’s up to Isla to save it which is how she ends up as the new president of the Waves, the basketball team her family owns.

Fun and entertaining, Running Point is easily bingeable. Because of this, I wondered what other options there may be and so this is what we’re looking for today. Some are closer to the Netflix plot and others aren’t at all similar to the comedy with Kate Hudson. Then I know, there are some that should be here, but were (embarrassingly) forgotten.

FILMS and TV to WATCH if you like RUNNING POINT

CHEERS

This one is very different from Running Point but despite this, I’m including this because of the sports connection and for the change in “boss” later in the season’s run. The show follows Ted Danson’s ladies man character who was once a professional player but now he owns a bar.

FAIRLY LEGAL

A legal show, yes, but Sarah Shi plays quite the sassy and confident leading lady which brings to mind Hudson’s sassy Isla. In this story she plays someone who left behind the family business to forge her own career path only for that family business to return to her life in the aftermath of her father’s death.

A female sports fanatic works in a male dominated world as well as living in one between her brothers and besties, most of whom are male. Jordan Spiro leads this one in a short-lived TV show that is quite funny.

NECESSARY ROUGHNESS

Big on the sports theme, only in this it’s football, this short three season run series has Callie Thorne in the lead role as a psychotherapist, who ends up working for a professional football team when her private life crumbles.

PITCH

A short-lived Fox drama, this one follows a female baseball player and was really popular with viewers.

the FILMS

13 GOING on 30

In an iconic role, Jennifer Garner plays a woman who dreams of being an important exec in a 30, flirty and thriving lifestyle. She wakes up in the 30-year-old body the day after her thirteenth birthday, all while still believing she’s only thirteen!

CONFESSIONS of a SHOPAHOLIC

Based on the Sophie Kinsella novel, Isla Fisher stars in this. She plays a woman unable to manage her finances (which ruins her own life as well as her friendships) which forces her to get a job, and quite by accident, she ends up working at a finance publication.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA

Iconic as a film that probably shouldn’t be getting its rumored sequel, Anne Hathaway stars in this one about a girl who must put up with an impossible boss, but who eventually finds her footing. Funnily enough, in promotion for Running Point, Hudson has made comments that she was offered a role in this film and had to turn it down because of other commitments. Having seeing her in Running Point, do we think she’d have ruled in this?

HOW to LOSE a GUY in 10 DAYS

This one is perhaps the title least fitting on this list, but there is a workplace vibe because it’s about two working professionals who make a bet, little knowing that they’ve picked the one other person who is also making a bet. The film has no in-between (people either love or loathe it) and does feature Kate Hudson which is the second reason I’m including it here.

NEW in TOWN

Like most of these titles, this one also isn’t “carbon copy” alike to Kate Hudson’s Running Point. However, it does evoke those feelings with its kind of fish-out-of-water heroine who finds her business acumen in a difficult situation, and ends up being a boss.

THE PROPOSAL

This one is all about Sandra Bullock’s stubborn and bossy boss character. It’s another one that’s a stretch to include, yes, but it’s still worth watching and like I said, it has a sassy boss in Bullock’s character.

SECOND ACT

Jennifer Lopez plays a loveable woman with business smarts but she lacks the formal education to impress anyone. When a fake profile gets her an interview and lands her a job she isn’t on paper qualified for, her entire life shifts.

SET it UP

This one is a workplace rom-com about two assistants who try to matchmake their bosses so that they can get a life. I think there is a sports connection, too, plus the banter is fabulous and this one features Glen Powell before he was Glen Powell.

Stream, exclusively, on Netflix

  1. I haven’t watched Running Point yet, but it’s definitely on my watchlist. And I’m a ’90s kid, so most of these rom-coms give me nostalgia.
