‘THE ROYAL WE’: A STORY ABOUT ONE ROMANCE OF CONVENIENCE

Put together with two other ‘royal’ titles to make a trio of newcomers, The Royal We gets things started. This one is all about the marriage of convenience trope, which I’m recently learning is quite an annoyance for some fans.

The Royal We (2025) TV Film Review

Living life on her terms is something Bea (Mallory Jansen) has loved. If she were born the oldest her life would be very different. As the younger daughter in a royal family, she’s been able to excuse herself from the duties of royal life. However, when the pressure of this life gets to her sister and she elopes with someone who is not exactly suitable, the duties fall to Bea. This includes honoring a marriage arrangement between Bea’s family and the prince of another kingdom.

Overnight, Bea goes from being inconspicuous to engaged and set to take a throne that wasn’t ever meant for her…

TV FILM REVIEW | ‘SISTERHOOD, INC’ IS ONE CUTE COMEDY ABOUT SISTERS PLUS A LITTLE ROMANCE, TOO

Every trope has haters. Every trope has lovers. This marriage of convenience trope is no different, but I guess I never really thought about it being annoying in the way that say, a love triangle is. I think, when done well, it’s really sweet. The Royal We is funnier and more lighthearted, because the film takes a more lighthearted approach to the concept, and as is always what we “know” to be the case, respect and love forms between the two people.

The impromptu date is quite cute (and has classic 90s romcom feels) as is Bea’s bestie (again more classic feels since she gives Lilly vibes from The Princess Diaries). Mallory Jansen is again fun in the role of a leading lady. She has a lot of energy in the role and I appreciate that she plays Bea as (mostly) fair, but she doesn’t lose herself either. The script leans into the fairytale being a kind of danger, which I understand. However, at the same time, as someone who grew up in the Disney age of them, I turned out fully understanding they are merely fiction. As a result, I don’t see harm in enjoying fairytales.

True of anything you will see when turning on this channel, well The Royal We is darling. It’s a new royal story that we don’t see often (on Hallmark), and it gives us plenty to cheer on. Plus, you get a tiny preview nod of the next two Royal flicks in this trio.

Stream, at publication, The Royal We on Hallmark+ or Peacock (next day)
