‘THE MAGIC OF LEMON DROPS’ IS A FEEL-GOOD WHIMSICAL STORY

Inspired by a novel titled The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie, this TV version is, from what I understand, different, but The Magic of Lemon Drops, this 2024 film is cute.

The Magic of Lemon Drops (2024) TV Film Review

Trying to reinspire her family restaurant is not something Lolly (Lyndsy Fonseca) is winning. Her father refuses to change anything on the menu even with Lolly’s inventive ideas. She is trying her best though to keep her head above water dealing with her sister wanting to travel thousands of miles away on another possible wild career chase while going through the things of her late mother and running into the one that got away.

Then, wishes change everything. Lolly wakes one day after wishing on a lemon drop. She receives four lemon drops that give her the life she wishes she had, and the power to choose that alternate life if she wants it…

I didn’t read the novel, despite telling myself I would, but reading a sad story just wasn’t the “feel” I wanted right now. So, I broke my rule of reading the book first. Instead, now here we are, watching The Magic of Lemon Drops, and discovering it’s cute. The concept is all whimsical and magic, which is something not everyone likes, but the network’s summertime flicks from this year did indeed lean into this.

The film is the same in many ways, but it’s different too in that it uses tropes in its own way. This time we don’t see a “freaked out” heroine at these shifting lives because she expects them and chooses her realities. Then there is also the lack of a “bonding” trope with a child, which wouldn’t usually be an eliminated part of this kind of script. I think in some ways that’s good. At the end of it all, this also manages to be a “feel good” film even with the bittersweetness.

Full of whimsy and charm and romance in small parts, The Magic of Lemon Drops is sweet. Though its ratings say it’s not a popular favorite and you may not love the ending, I think this one may be my favorite of the Summer Nights titles.
