10+ SHOWS TO WATCH IF YOU LIKE ‘RANSOM CANYON’
Bringing another popular binge watch to their library, Netflix has another hit on their hands. This time with a contemporary western saga. As a result of this new popularity, it’s again time to put together another like of recommendation titles – from film and TV! Adding to our ‘watchalike’ collections today looks at 10 shows to watch if you like Ransom Canyon.

Share on XThe Netflix show, just in case you aren’t familiar with it, follows Josh Duhamel’s Staten, a widower and ranch owner who ends up clashing with the stunning Quinn, the former native turned New Yorker. Now back home, Quinn is a new business owner, and the pair don’t always get on, but as the seasoned TV watcher knows, these two have some sizzle which makes us want to see them get together. There are, of course, more characters and more good-lookin’ cowboys, too.
Since this is one of those popular and charting shows on Netflix, let’s take a look at 10 shows to watch if you like Ransom Canyon or at the very least, some similar TV titles (and film, too). Some of these may be obnoxiously obvious, but the hope is to find some that would be more of a hidden gem.
10+ SHOWS to WATCH if you LIKE RANSOM CANYON
BLUE RIDGE
This was a film (which is on Prime Video) but then also become a six episode show with the returning cast including Sarah Lancaster. It follows a community in the Blue Ridge Mountains where a murder causes a feud to bubble up again. The show has the hero, Justin, moving home again to be nearer his ex and daughter. TVPG is the rating for this show.

HEARTLAND
A long running Canadian show, Heartland is a wholesome family drama that follows Amy, a young woman who loses her mother and turns to her love of horses to help heal. The bulk of the show is Amy living with her grandfather and the arrival of her elder sister, Lou. The show spans many years as it follows the lives of these characters. TVPG is the rating for this show; there may be the odd episode more deserving of a TV14 rating, but all I saw of this one is very wholesome.

HOPE FLOATS, film
Sandra Bullock stars in this film about a woman who returns to her small home town and Harry Connick Jr. plays the local cowboy who steals her heart. PG13 is the rating for this film.

JOE PICKETT
Set in a small rural town, Joe Pickett is a two season TV show that follows a game warden and his family during an “economic collapse.” TV14 is the rating, but some episodes have the 16+ rating

LANDMAN
This, like Ransom Canyon, is from what I see, another adult show. Billy Bob Thornton plays an oil man in this role as the patriarch the family at the center of this story that is also said to have an upstairs / downstairs concept, too. Ali Larter also stars. TVMA is the rating for this show.

LONGMIRE
Set in Wyoming, this is a crime drama about a small town sheriff who encounters more than one challenging villain. Throughout the series, he also deals with feuds with a casino owner. The show does have, surprisingly, a very slow burn romance. It’s one that viewers will either love or find unbelievable. TV14 is the rating for this show; although some streamers may pin it with a TVMA rating (it does contain violence and a sex scene in some episodes)

MCLEOD’S DAUGHTERS
This is an Australian show about two sisters who, after being estranged for years, reunite on their family’s cattle station in the outback. TV14 is the rating.

RIDE
A limited one season 10 episode series that aired on Hallmark, this follows a family struggling to keep their family ranch alive. Nancy Travis (post Last Man Standing) plays the matriarch of the family that is grieving the loss of a son while also struggling with their legacy. TVPG is the rating for this show; from what I remember, it is a bit more “adult” than Hallmark’s Saturday night movies.

A small town is the setting for this, though likely it’s not the same “western” feel as Ransom Canyon. Still, it’s about many of the same things including a woman returning to her small town and the guy who she loves, played by Chad Michael Murray. TV14 is the show’s rating

TERRITORY
This is a Netflix drama and has Robert Taylor (from Longmire) in a role. The show follows the Lawson cattle station and is a story set in Australia, following a dynasty that is perhaps in decline. TVMA is the rating for this show, likely for violence, profanity (f-word) and sex.

A THOUSAND TOMORROWS
Inspired by the novel by Karen Kingsbury, but this one has Rose Reid and Colin Ford in the lead roles. It features Ford as Cody, a bull rider who makes sacrifices to be with the one he loves. This isn’t one I’ve seen, but I did read other novels by Kingsbury, and they are bittersweet and sometimes they are a little too much so for me. Because of the author, this one likely has a thread faith so very likely it’s a much more wholesome western. TVPG is the rating for this show.

VIRGIN RIVER
This one is perhaps obvious, but I had to include it. It’s from Netflix, but is also a bit more wholesome than Ransom Canyon. They share many similarities though being about community, a small town and plenty of romantic drama. TV14 is the rating for this show.

WALKER
From the 90s, there was Walker, Texas Ranger with Chuck Norris and then CW remade the show in 2020 with longtime collab and lead actor partner Jared Padalecki. Padalecki is lead in the titular role and unlike Norris’ character, his is a grieving widowed father of teenagers who he tries to learn how to parent after being undercover as a Texas Ranger after he left, grieving for his wife. Sadly, this is less about the weekly cases (which 20-some episode shows need to return to) and much more about being a familial drama. So if that’s your thing, this may be your kind of western drama. TV14 is the rating for this show.

THE WAY HOME
This one is not a western, but it is a generational story, and the romance set up reminds me a great deal of how Ransom Canyon is taking its romance. Plus, while not a western, the show does take place in the country and there is a horse.

WILDFIRE
This show, from 2005, Wildfire tells the story of a heroine who befriends the titular horse and the chance she believes she gest when working at a ranch feels like the chance she needs to build a life. TV14 is the rating for this show.

YELLOWSTONE
I’ve never seen a single episode of this highly rated show, which chronicles the lives of the Dutton family. It has (for most of the seasons) Kevin Costner in the patriarchal role of the family that is messy and messed up. Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes, and Wes Bentley round out the lead cast. TVMA is the rating for this show.

BONUS! UNDER the VINES
This one isn’t a great comparison. But it fits in the sense of being about a small community and the drama; there is a lot of ups and downs in that too. The show is set at a vineyard. TV14 is the rating.
