‘THE PERFECT COUPLE’ IS EMPTY AND MESSY BUT TRIES HAPPY END

Why I do not know, but dramas like Netflix’s The Perfect Couple are trending and each of the “big” streamers has their own version. Late to the party though I am, let’s see what this one is all about.

The Perfect Couple (2024) Netflix TV Review

The wedding of the season is here. Amelia Saks (Eve Hewson), a clever girl with no connections or wealth, is about to marry the good-looking and very wealthy Benji (Billy Howle). The rehearsal dinner is taking place and Amelia’s bestest and most loyal friend Meritt (Meghann Fahy) is a part of the elaborate party celebrating the happy couple. But Amelia has doubts, which Meritt tries to ease. Then things happen; words are said, Amelia gets mad, and then she tries to ease her doubts. In the wee hours of her wedding day, she puts on her wedding dress, and makes a discovery that forever changes her.

Meritt’s body lies prone on the beach.

This brings the local police snooping inside the elaborate Nantucket home of the Winbury family. There its matriarch and best-selling author Greer (Nicole Kidman) tries to keep a careful handle on this PR nightmare.

Star-studded, yes and certainly gorgeous, I’m not at all sure what good there can be said beyond those facts. I’d be lying if I were to say that this doesn’t intrigue. The episodes leave us wanting more answers. Still, having and wanting answers are two entirely different things. I’m not sure how to answer my own question that opens this review, which is, why are these types of dramas so popular? You all know the ones, dramas about wealthy people living miserable lives.

In a nutshell, this limited series has no happiness. Everyone is lying, cheating on one another and takes pleasure in “torturing” one another. It makes me sad. So yes, while there is curiosity and questions about what comes next, the show isn’t warm and fuzzy. When there is an ensemble cast like this, I like to see someone happy, and yet, in a mystery such as The Perfect Couple, I do understand the reason behind the misery.

The cast is brilliant, and I applaud how everyone plays these characters (though I think some are getting pigeonholed into playing the same type of role in the same type of drama). Perhaps it’s because I’ve binged several dramas like this recently, including Prime Video’s The Better Sister and Netflix’s Sirens, but these stories leave me feeling is empty. Sure, the actors do a grand job of inspiring questions of loyalty or ability to kill, but there is nothing more. Having said that, I do have to give this one props. Where other of its genre peers leave us with no soul, I think this one does attempt to provide some sense of “better” or change for these characters.

Even saying all this, I do “get” the appeal of these dramas. But if I’m going to spend six dang hours with a group of people, I want there to be some sign of healing. There is some small sense this miniseries does try to grasp this, and I will admit, that makes me happy.

Content: Several cases of F-word usage. Other lesser profanity like shit is present. There are affairs that surface. One scene shows a man emerging from the covers with a woman (we hear her pleasure off screen) and they lay in bed together; we see them in another episode. Another woman and man make out, strip down, and get “turned on” for sex (she backs into him and rubs against him before leaving because she isn’t “satisfied”). While one is under the influence of drinking, a couple has sex. An affair results in a pregnancy. Conversation revolves around being happy about a sex life. More than one depiction of drug use is present. The show is, appropriately, TVMA.
