‘THE WATERFRONT’: NETFLIX GETS HIGH ON THE FAMILY DRAMA

Another dramatic show is dropping into our possible watchlists, and this time, we are told it’s inspired by “true events,” so let’s learn more about The Waterfront.

The Waterfront (2025) Netflix TV Review

Decades living in Havenport North Carolina will teach anyone one thing, the Buckley family is a kind of untouchable one. They go back generations and their fishing “empire” is the center of the town for decades. But now, things are changing, and decline is more normal for Harlan Buckley (Holt McCallany). He’s trying to recover from some serious life-threatening health problems which prompts his wife, Belle (Maria Bello) to take a greater role in their business assets, and son Cane (Jake Weary) too tries to take over his father’s role. Trying to save the failing business, he steps into illegal waters and brings the DEA to their door, which prompts Harlan to reclaim the reigns…

Then there is daughter Bree (Melissa Benoist). A woman with a set of skeletons all her own, she has lost everything in her quest for self-destruction, which loses her the one thing she does love. Now, she is bringing more trouble to her family’s doorstep…

TV SHOW REVIEW | ‘THE BETTER SISTER’: A DARK MYSTERY FROM PRIME VIDEO

I’m not sure how popular this eight-part drama will be, but I decided to watch an episode or two and share a “first impression” review. Like so many similar shows, this one is high on drama. I’m not sure why we find the wealthy-people-doing-questionable-shit thing so interesting, but for reasons I don’t know, we do. This show is another of those even if it is more about the family “crumbling” than having all the power. The cast is really good but so far I really don’t like their characters. Included in the cast also is Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, Topher Grace, Dave Annable, and Michael Gaston.

The Waterfront isn’t just a family drama though. It sets up quite the mystery in the first two minutes and makes us question, what is going on and who are these people? Like I said, there are some interesting plots and stories that begin. The drama is definitely high and for me, this makes the story or plot exhausting. I have no idea whether or not this will get more episodes, but it’s not something that I’ll be caring about in terms of rewatching or seeing more stories. It’s a show that fits as “once is enough.”

If you want something to binge that is dramatic and available to binge, well then, you may enjoy The Waterfront.

Stream exclusively on Netflix; all eight episodes are now streaming

Content: affairs are going on and there’s lots of “normalcy” surrounding at least one. There is profanity including the f-word and a man strips down naked and the camera barley avoids frontal male nudity (we see his backside; another scene has another full backside nude shot). We see a far out shot of a couple having sex on a dresser (both are naked). Lots of conversation about sex (and feeling up someone or a “hand job”) or flirting with affairs. If it bothers you, one character is in a same-sex relationship. There is violence, too. This ranges from someone receiving a bullet in the head to punching people or slapping someone around. The show has lots of F-words; a woman is doused in gas and nearly set on fire. The rating is TV-MA. Note; this content only reflects episodes one – four.
