SEE RICHARD ARMITAGE FROM ‘NORTH AND SOUTH’ IN MORE MEMORABLE ROLES (AND DANIELA DENBY-ASHE!)
It’s the U.S. anniversary year for the stunning period drama North and South, and so it’s an easy something easy to celebrate and spotlight during this anniversary year. One way I’m doing this is by look at some of the other roles the leading stars have been in. The leads are, of course, Daniela Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage. Now we’re going to look at the roles these two have played in through the years.

SEE RICHARD ARMITAGE FROM ‘NORTH AND SOUTH’ IN MORE MEMORABLE ROLES (AND DANIELA DENBY-ASHE!). #NorthandSouth #PeriodDrama #RichardArmitage Share on XFrom period dramas to contemporary TV shows, these two have featured in other roles. Sadly, they aren’t in another title together (because we all know we love them together in the Elizabeth Gaskell adaptation, plus that train scene is an iconic favorite) but they did feature in other memorable roles playing other interesting characters. For Armitage, this was a big, breakout role (at least in period drama). He’d played in a miniseries prior to this but had minor roles in other titles until North and South. For Denby-Ashe, she was one of the billed stars in TV comedy (that is quite funny!).
So, that’s the goal today. Allow me to introduce (or maybe remind) you to them all.

GUY of GISBORNE from ROBIN HOOD, 2006 – 2009
For some reason, perhaps because of his dark, and brooding looks (he does give off that kind of “look”), Armitage seems to play a baddie or at the very least, morally gray character often. One of these is Guy from the enormously fun BBC series Robin Hood. While early seasons keep things light and entertaining, the latter years do drift into depressing, but that’s beside the point. The point is, Armitage never did make disliking a baddie in leather quite as fun as this.

HARRY KENNEDY from THE VICAR OF DIBLEY, 2006 – 2007
This comedy show is one I’ve seen several episodes from but I guess I didn’t see the episodes featuring Armitage. He was in a mere two of them, in a latter season and plays a romantic interest for lead, and titular character, Dawn French. One of his featured episodes is the Christmas special, which I think almost anyone enjoys seeing from their favorite TV series.

PHILIP DURANT from MARPLE, 2007
In this 90-minute installment, from the ITV series Marple, Armitage played in an Agatha Christie story and he’s good. Again, he’s morally gray and definitely questionable, but he plays the role well, so we deal.

LUCAS NORTH from MI-5, 2008
Described as a show that follows “the UK’s domestic intelligence organization,” this is a show that seems a bit intense, but it boasts some great cast names. Including, of course, Richard Armitage, who appears as Lucas in 20+ episodes. This show is, at least on some platforms like Prime Video, also known as Spooks.

JOHN PORTER from STRIKE BACK, 2010
Eight episodes is the credit for Armitage’s character in this show, a number that is slim in comparison to the rest of the cast. This one is a mystery show that looks like another that is probably a bit intense, and like there is some heavy seriousness going on. But then sometimes maybe we like seeing something that gets our hearts racing because of danger rather than that perfect final kiss.
This show is not, at present, available to stream (Prime Video says it’s because of “expired rights”), but you can search places like Amazon for DVD sets
THORIN from THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY, 2012
I never saw the LOTR or The Hobbit movies, but I know lots of people love these films. Maybe at some point I’ll watch one of them (likely just for their equally impressive casts), but I think middle earth stories and biblical time stories just aren’t my kind of “period dramas” so that has, I’m sure, played a big role in why I haven’t see it. The first Hobbit film follows, “Hobbit Bilbo Baggins joins 13 dwarves on a quest to reclaim the lost kingdom of Erebor.” – Prime Video

GARY from INTO the STORM, 2014
Never did see this film, but it seems like a good title to watch if you like the Twister movies. The synopsis has the film following “storm tracker, thrill-seekers, and everyday townspeople” who try to deal and cope with an onslaught of tornadoes.

Appearing in 20+ episodes (out of nearly thirty), Armitage stars in this drama that follows a group of CIA agents who work in “clandestine” missions.

TOM CAHALAN from BRAIN on FIRE
Inspired by the true story of Susannah Cahalan, this is a film that has Chloe Grace Moretz in the lead, and Richard Armitage as one of her costars. I remember reading about the film, which dropped on Netflix, but I didn’t ever see it; medical stories and I don’t usually get along but maybe the cast will eventually persuade me.

CLAUDE BECKER from OCEAN’S EIGHT, 2018
It’s been a long time since I watched this “spin off” version from the popular Ocean’s 11 movies, but Armitage does have a credit for this title. I don’t even remember him, so I’m guessing his role is relatively insignificant in terms of screen time though I am certain he makes an impression.

ADAM PRINCE from THE STRANGER, 2020
An eight-part miniseries mystery, this show follows a family who has their lives upended by the arrival of an unexpected stranger. Armitage plays Adam, a man who seems to have it all only to have his life changed when someone tells him something about his wife he didn’t know.
Stream, at publication, with Netflix
HARLEN COBEN adaptations
Armitage has appeared in at least three adaptations, plus The Stranger, from Harlen Coben. I’ve not seen any, but they frequently appear on Netflix, so I am assuming they must be popular.
DENBY-ASHE roles
sadly, Daniela hasn’t been in a lot of titles. she guests in shows that have over 200 episodes, which doesn’t feel significant though I have zero doubt she’s good in all of the role she plays. were still going to take a peek at things she did star in. she also appears in over 300 episodes of the British soap drama EastEnders.
JANEY HARPER from MY FAMILY, 2000 – 2011
Daniela played the hilarious daughter in this British sitcom about a dentist who believes everyone in his family is a little bit “out there.” The family consists of two sons, a daughter and wife. Eventually a grandchild also enters the portrait. The sitcom doesn’t have a lot of episodes since British shows have fewer episodes, but did thoroughly enjoy what is here. Arguably, when just looking at her credits, this feels like her “biggest” role outside of North and South and those 300-some episodes of EastEnders.

HANNAH from CROOKED HOUSE, 2008
Despite its title, this miniseries (Daniela features in two of the four installments) is not an Agatha Christie adaptation. It’s described as ghost story though, so I’m sure mystery abounds!

LORRAINE DONNEGAN from WATERLOO ROAD, 2012
From its Prime Video page, this one says that its about (or the first season is!) an “overwhelmed new headmaster Jack Rimmer recruits optimistic educational zealot Andrew Treneman, who believes in strict discipline.”
