We Were Liars (2025) Amazon MGM Studios Review
Cousins gather every summer to swim and tell the “tallest tales” and this is how we meet the slightly crazy and a little bit unusual Sinclair family. They are American royalty and their summers spent on a private property haven start magical until they turn scary especially for Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind). The end of summer 16 ends badly and she experiences something bad happening to her. Thing is, she cannot remember what happened and no one, not her family or best friend, Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) will tell her about it. Why, she tells us, she doesn’t know. Is it because it will destroy her or because it will destroy them.
Time passes and Cady, along with her cousins the wild Johnny (Joseph Zada) and the trying-to-be-the-good-girl-daughter Mirren (Esther McGregor) have magical summers each year until summer 16, when everything changes. Gat isn’t Cady’s same best friend anymore and then that summer ends Cady’s world as she knows it. Now summer 17 is here, and she determines to remember and find out what happened…
TV SHOW REVIEW | ‘THE WATERFRONT’: NETFLIX GETS HIGH ON THE FAMILY DRAMA
‘WE WERE LIARS’: A GIRL SEEKS ANSWERS TO MYSTERY. Review of the 2025 #PrimeVideo title #WeWereLiars. #ELockhart #Drama #Mystery Share on X
Everything about this show screams as being similar to several others we’ve seen time and again from various streaming platforms. The show tries to build a mystery as it shows various snaps of a woman in water and the opening shot is again a woman badly injured in water and then on the beach lying prone. Meaning, yes, this one keeps to the same pattern of so many shows which is to create a what happened mystery.
The story of We Were Liars is interesting, and I do appreciate that portions of it keep to light and pretty because of the setting and the summertime storytelling. There is lots of magical storytelling and scenes from an epic first kiss to a lit boardwalk to the gorgeous beach-y landscapes. It’s all pretty and unique and makes the storytelling stand out more because of how gorgeous it is. I’m not really “into” the romance though (at least at this point) which is perhaps hypocritical to feel since there are probably other romances I like that have “issues,” but whatever. It’s how I feel right now.
The first episode ends just as it should which is to catapult us straight into the mystery. So episode one gives us happy and then we have to work through, with a very changed Cady what happened because she is won’t stop in her pursuit to know what happened, she needs to know her story, despite what her family says. I’m not sure how much I’ll enjoy this at its conclusion, but I suspect I will watch the rest, but perhaps first a break is needed before the second act drama unfolds.
THE TRAILER
Poster Art: Amazon MGM Studios / Prime Video
Stream, at publication, We Were Liars exclusively on Prime Video
Content: Teenagers party and go on a party boat, there is underage drinking and conversations recounting their sexual experiences. One character talks about “sexting” with someone older than they are. Another character talks about ruining a friendship by “going” for a kiss (and more), all in reference to the same-sex (if this bothers you). There are quite a lot of sexual innuendo and kissing between both opposite and same sex “hookups” or couples. An adult couple hooks up in a boat shed and someone sees them after hearing all the moaning and sounds. Teens use drugs. The show rates TV-14 and also has the 16+ rating too. Note; this content only references episodes one and two.
