‘CUTTHROAT ISLAND’: PIRATES GO ON A HIGH SEAS ADVENTURE
A pirates film that didn’t do well in its theater run, but perhaps did (in some odd way) pave the way for the eventual success of the Johnny Depp Disney pirate film, Cutthroat Island is a swashbuckling good time.
Cutthroat Island (1995) Film Review
Sassy determination means Morgan Adams (Geena Davis) is a woman not to trifle with. Right now, she’s especially motivated after her father’s brother murdered him when her father refuses to give up his portion of a treasure map. Now, Morgan is trying to keep the ship her father leaves her and racing against her sinister relatives to find the treasure.
This leads her to buy a servant. William Shaw (Matthew Modine) is something of a con man who, like Morgan, is quite comfortable going outside the law to accomplish what he wants.

This is one of those 90s films I saw years ago, and until recently, I didn’t see it again. The film, which does take us on quit an adventure, is one with lead characters boasting questionable morals and therefore they aren’t always totally likable. Irrespective of this, Cutthroat Island is still a good deal of, well, fun.
The cast is both surprising and very impressive. Frank Langella is one of the names that many will recognize. Geena Davis also had many impressive performances and credits to her name once upon a time as well. Everyone, even the numerous supporting cast members are impressive, and I thoroughly enjoy them despite their inability to know what it means to understand right and wrong.
Those of us who like fun movies that also use the swashbuckler genre will find in this an entertaining adventure. The film isn’t perfect, and it does stumble here and there, but it ultimately teaches its leads what loyalty, at least to each other if no one else, means and that’s a win.

Content: we see the naked side/backside of a woman as she leaves a bed where a man lies (sheets covering him). She dresses in another scene too. Another scene sees a man tend to her wounds where she is in a state of undress and his hands “wonder.” There are also countless sexual innuendoes and profanity including sh*t and some other slang profanity. The film is PG-13.
