IT’S NOT SUMMER WITHOUT YOU book review

REVIEW: The “middle child” novel in Jenny Han’s popular young adult series is, well, interesting. It reunites the characters, Conrad and Jeremiah along with Belly, in a story that perhaps is the bridge between book one and the final of the trilogy. This said, I’m not sure that this story plays out in in the wisest of ways.

Like the series, the book vacillates between present and past as Belly remembers key moments from her fling (though she didn’t intend it to be so) with the boy she’s always loved, Conrad. Then there is his brother, Jeremiah, the boy who has always loved Belly. So yeah, things get, well, a bit complicated.

I did enjoy these books, but since I read them so long after I’d fall into the target age range, I’m not sure that I totally “get” the appeal. I do know, no matter my age, that I’m over the whole drama of choosing someone. I want a hero or heroine who knows the right match for them and either fights for that or moves on altogether. But again, since this is a YA novel, I think it’s probably fair to allow some leeway for the novel.

If you’re loving the show or enjoy Jenny’s books, these are worth reading. I’m not loving one of the characters though if I had to guess, this character is endgame, so we’ll see how I feel about the person once I read mor of the third book! Either way, these books are certainly ideal summertime reads that do draw a tear or too along with lots of smiles.

Content: the book has some adult content that shouldn’t rate more than the PG-13 content of the Prime Video show. There is lots of kissing. There may be some minor profanity. Lots of emotional fallout also factors into this story because of death, divorce and remarks about cheating.
