The plot revolves around Cavill’s Solo, a CIA agent working during the Cold War who helps Vikander’s Gaby Teller, a woman ready to defect to Germany. All of this he does while KGB agent Kuryakin chases them and tries to prevent their success. Of course, in time, they learn that they must work together on a mission.

The film moves forward from here as they work a mission in a slower paced plot that fits the spy game plot the film tells. On this day aka August 14th, the film celebrates this tenth anniversary and so we are looking into some of our favorite things about The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

THE CAST

Everyone is good in this cast list. I cannot compare them to the actors who made the roles famous, but I like Henry Cavill in everything he’s been in, and this title is no different. It’s also unexpected and fun to see Hugh Grant appear in a role. He infuses his usual “fun” into the role, and even with that he plays a kind of boss character that makes this feel a little different than the usual character he plays.

Though she’s been in a lot of roles, I haven’t seen Alicia Vikander in much, but she’s good in this title. I like her sass and at the same time she has a deadpan serious quality that seems to “fit” into this era so well. As a very unconventional team, the actors play their respective roles memorably and of course, Guy Ritchie helming as director gives the production additional flair.

THE DIRECTOR

I know there is, but I’m not sure there is a cooler director than Guy Ritchie when it comes to crafting films that give viewers a dang good time. I certainly haven’t seen every director making cool movies and I know I’ve forgotten some directors who craft neat flicks, but honestly, Ritchie has a knack for putting together movies that are exciting and engaging. (Even if some find them highly offensive aka dumb.)

THE COMEDY

When it comes to the technicality of what makes good comedy, this I don’t know. As a result, I base my opinion on what makes me laugh or sometimes what feels objectively funny. This film seems to have a great sense of humor. It’s witty and dry, but the interactions between Solo and Kuryakin are funny and in some ways, they kind of fall into the “buddy comedy” later on in the film. There are some genuinely fabulous moments of humor which gives the film a second layer. Morbid yes, but one such scene has the male leads arguing and completely unaware of what is going on, a baddie perishes behind them. There is also a hilarious sequence (the music choice, the timing, everything is great) that shows one character fighting for his life, while the other out of reach and is purposely chilling out.

THE FASHION

Falling under the same heading as Alicia is the fashion. While the men look dapper and dashing, too, Alicia really carries the fashion of the film. They look smart in their suits but it’s more the girls who captures ones attention. She wears the outfits well and provides color against a grayer filmscape. Then there is Elizabeth Debicki who also wears snazzy and fashionable ensembles that really does add a lot to the film, and helps it co-operate as a period drama.

THE SPY GAME

I do really like the “spy” part of this film, which let’s be real, is the primary aspect and story of this film. Sure there are other elements, but mostly the film operates solely as a movie about spies doing mysterious and covert things. The story takes advantage of the decade its set in and moves at a slower pace which maybe is occasionally a little boring, but the film is still intriguing and fabulous in how it executes its spying games.
