IT’S NATIONAL BEST FRIENDS DAY! HERE ARE SOME OF THE BEST FILM AND TV FRIENDSHIPS
When it comes to getting in on all of the on the day buzzy and trendy things, well, I often miss out. Such is the case for this list since I missed sharing it on International Best Friends day which is when everyone else used the day for listicle fun. Instead, I must settle for National Best Friends Day (I guess it needs to be celebrated, too, right?) with some favorite best friends across film and TV. I’m not sure who we’ll find, but the “hunt” can be part of the fun so let’s get seeking.

IT’S NATIONAL BEST FRIENDS DAY! HERE ARE SOME OF THE BEST FILM AND TV FRIENDSHIPS. #Friends #BestFriends #NationalBestFriendsDay #TVShows #HarryWild #Poirot #Wicked Share on XBest friends can look like so many different things. Sometimes they are never more than besties and other times, they start as such and then you do wonder, is there a less-than-platonic spark between them? While most of the feature will spotlight the former, we may also have a slightly (but not really) controversial pair or two! Hopefully all of us have met or will meet that one person who we can tell anything to and trust as the best kind of bestie! Let’s have some fun and see how many of these we can find living in the cinematic world.
FAVORITE BEST FRIENDS from FILLM and TV
There are spoilers below!
Note; there is an older “friendship” list in our archives, which you can also browse!
SAM CLARKE and JOHN DERRINGER from HEADS of STATE
These two are a weird pairing as friends, and they quite hate each other in fact. However, all this to say, this is part of the funny and they end up being interesting and fun friends! The film plays out this kind of unconventional friendship surprisingly well and gives viewers lots of laughs.

BELLY CONKLIN and TAYLOR from THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY
These two…! We do love them, right? True Taylor can be, how do we say this… a lot? But her heart is so good and I think she has had to grow up a lot (which the show dives into where the book doesn’t), which can make the best of us sometimes come off badly. At the end of the day, like so many of the other besties we have to feature, they are still there for each other even while they juggle other obligations.

CAROLINE DUFFY and ANNIE from CAROLINE in the CITY
A 90s sitcom friendship that is, perhaps, underrated, I like these two together. I think Annie (of the two women) changes most but it’s all positive and one thing she remains is sassy and opinionated. They go through some ups and downs, but mostly I think they are there for each other. I mean, don’t quote me on this because it’s been a while since I binge watched this sitcom, but can I also say another thing? (I’m going to anyway.) This one may be too dated for some to enjoy, but Caroline in the City is quite charming!

FERGUS and HARRY WILD from HARRY WILD
A very unconventional friendship between a teen (17 or 18, I think) and a retired professor. Still, irrespective of the perhaps unusual friendship, this Acorn TV original is so much fun! It’s about them solving unusual murders or solving cases requiring a private detective, all to the aggravation of Harry’s police detective son, Charlie. The show has Jane Seymour in the titular role and is worth watching if you like crime dramas that have a lighter bent.

GALINDA and ELPHABA from WICKED
These two are fractured (badly it would seem) by the time the cinematic wonder that is Wicked ends (or rather begins!). But the sequel (Wicked: For Good) will drop this fall so we shall see how things end for these two. In the “before” of their relationship, they do share some nice moments, and we see the framing of their friendship before things go sideways. Still, I feel like they would be on a list for some of favorite best friends.

MRS. HALL and SIEGFRIED FARNON from ALL CREATURES GREAT and SMALL
These two! There has been sprinkles of speculation that they perhaps have a spark of romance, but mostly they work as friends and people who genuinely care about each other. They have been each other’s confidante for some of their most vulnerable moments, and Anna Madeley and Samuel West play them (and these moments) so very well.

BRIDGET JONES and DANIEL from BRIDGET JONES: MAD ABOUT the BOY
Weirdly, though minor, I do quite like the friendship between Bridget and Daniel in the third (and final) Bridget Jones film. He’s still rather brash and annoying, but I think underneath, in this film he does mean well and wants good things for Bridget.
Stream, at publication, with Peacock; or digitally purchase on places like Prime Video
KEATS and MICHELLE from THE ELECTRIC STATE
This is a generation gap friendship that maybe works better as more of a big brother / little sis relationship. I don’t know which I think is more prevalent, but the barbs and sass that passes between then is fun and Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown play their respective roles well.
Stream, at publication, on Netflix
HARRIET MANNERS and NAT from GEEK GIRL
Can we talk about how much I like these two? I think they are rather underrated and are as fun in the Netflix (and BBC) show as they are in the novels! Do they fall out over things? Absolutely, but at the end of the day, they are the bestest, supportive besties and so fun together.
Stream, at publication, exclusively with Netflix
THE MARLOW MURDER CLUB gang
These would-be sleuths are fun. They are different and each have their own lives to live which require different talents which they bring to their little “club.” Everyone is so fun with their crime-solving and of course, knowing this comes from Masterpiece PBS means it’s even better produced. favorite best friends
Playing these characters is Samantha Bond, Cara Hogan and Judith Potts and ps, season two will begin on Masterpiece PBS August 24!

Up until a specific episode (which is in a later season), these two co-workers really feel like friends to me. This isn’t to say they don’t tease and maybe even have a flirt or two, but also, I really detect just a solid and meaningful friendship. I know the idea was to end with them together, but they (spoiler!) really don’t. Sure, the inkling is there by the end, but if you watch the other shows set in this world, well, we find out that didn’t stick. I’m very much a put-them-together (especially if a show is ending) and let them be together or keep them friends type fan. The tease (that continues even after cancelation through spinoffs) can get too ridiculous even for a television show.

MINNIE and LELIA from THIS TIME NEXT YEAR
I love these two in this underrated cheerful British comedy. It’s based on the novel by Sophie Cousens and features a solid friendship (as well as a swoony romance, too!) between Minnie and Lelia. Their scenes together are rare but what is there is memorable.

HERCULE POIROT and CAPTAIN HASTINGS from POIROT
From the 90s, these two investigators have a solid friendship and are easily a favorite duo of favorite best friends, even if it’s pretty much solely cemented by the detecting work they do together. Regardless of if they really share nothing in common outside of this, their “odd couple” conversations are quite amusing and watching Hastings try to figure out why Poirot does what he does, well, this too is hilarious.

LUELLA SHAKESPEARE and FRANK HATHAWAY from SHAKESPEARE and HATHAWAY
These two are way fun together! They start out as an unlikely match, but end up pairing up and forming a business which, for them, ends up being a great match!
Stream, at publication, with BritBox, Hallmark Max or HBO Max
LAURA THYME and ROSEMARY from ROSEMARY and THYME
These two are hilarious together. They’re different but also very similar and I love how they randomly meet and without much explanation on screen they just are friends. In this case, it’s the kind of friends who end up solving curious mysteries together – all while creating beautiful gardens!
