‘HIGH POTENTIAL’ SEASON TWO: WHO IS THE GAME MASTER?

Picking up where the first leaves off, one of 2024’s most popular network dramas returns with High Potential season two. In this new season, we catch up with Morgan Gillory (Kaitlin Olson), the single mom cleaner-turned-MVP-PD-consultant, as she learns two things. First, she realizes that the criminal she is helping catch has subtly threatened her. Just as she learns this, her partner, Detective Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) calls her to say that they have found Roman, the disappearing ex she’s searching for.

Wanting only to protect her three kids, Morgan becomes overwhelmed with these two things. But even wanting her eldest daughter to know her father, seeing Roman takes second place in the pursuit of the criminal they are hunting. Known as The Game Master, the criminal arranges a “game” where the team can save the possible victim by playing a game or the person will die. New clues emerge but will this interest in Morgan be his downfall?

This was one of the fall’s new offerings last year that did relatively well even with the declining ratings for network shows. The show has a familiar but still entertaining premise and a cast that is quite good. The second season begins the same with great potential, and while things set up with a recurring “baddie” (not a favorite story plot for me), I’m still curious to see what is in store for Morgan and Co.

This show is a good deal of fun and having now binged season one (especially to see this second season), I can say it’s become one of my most favorite new shows. Thing is, and what gives me pause, I don’t like the set up of this Game Master being a plague for Morgan. I want him caught and locked up so we don’t have to see him again. Sadly, I have this feeling that the show will revisit him as a menace now and then. That’s not my kind of good TV. Still, I’ll give this season a beat or two before I let this twist me up as an ongoing problem.

The cast from its freshman season (including Matthew Lamb, Judy Reyes, and Amirah J) return; Steve Howey is set to be a newcomer, too. So the primary is back, but the promise of new faces may shake up the energy. The show is still a good deal of fun and something I anticipate seeing more of as this second year begins.

Stream High Potential season two on demand next day on Hulu; stream episodes next day weekly (as the season airs), and see season one now on Hulu.

Content: everything is on the same level as season one. There is talk of murder and someone is kidnapped. We will likely see bodies in this season and a flashback recounts a detective nearly dying. There is some minor innuendo and conversation talks about a man who has lots of sexual complaints against him. The show rates TV-14.
