‘WHEN CALLS THE HEART,’ SEASON 12 FIRST IMPRESSION TV REVIEW: A LOVE STORY BEGINS
Beginning just where season eleven lets off, When Calls the Heart season 12 begins with changes and an era about to usher in something entirely new.
When Calls the Heart, Season 12 (2025) TV Show Review
It’s 1921 and Elizabeth Thornton (Erin Krakow) prepares to step into a new relationship with Nathan Grant (Kevin McGarry). Then an unexpected visitor returns a piece of her heart and past. She also prepares to watch her young son begin school. Supportive of each other, Nathan and Elizabeth move forward with hope for the future, but conflict plagues Nathan. The entire community is happy for them all including Rosemary (Pascale Hutton).
Rosemary is a woman wearing many hats, but her latest is determination that her husband, Lee (Kavan Smith) won’t be joining Lucas (Chris McNally) in his new business endeavors. It would require a move and the force that Rosemary is, she won’t have them separated as as family. Elsewhere there is the blush of new love, graduating seniors, and other chances that may or may not challenge beloved characters.

In the town of Hope Valley, there are veteran characters wholeheartedly loved, and then there are newer faces that have won fans over. As my usual disclaimer, I do have to say that I don’t watch When Calls the Heart from episode to episode like I do so many other shows. This is one I just watch the first episode of the new season (typically) but then I also do see all of the happenings through various social media conversations or chatter. However, just based on these first episode viewings, I feel comfortable saying that the episodes I don’t see continue on in much the same fashion as any of the early seasons I did watch in full.
The characters feel very much the same. Rosemary is still a silly but delightful force; there are complexities to the character of Nathan, most especially in his side of the romance; Bill is the usual stalwart judge; and Elizabeth, the original character who has been the central character for all of these dozen seasons, is the same.
One of the things that dissuades me from truly loving this show is all of the modern scripting and costuming. While I likely make concessions for some shows, this one feels obviously modern in a way that distracts. When I watch a period drama I want it to transport rather than feel like I’m watching something modern where the characters merely wear costumes. Regardless of this, I know I’m far outnumbered as there are hundreds of fans. If you are one of these, you’ll be enchanted and charmed by When Calls the Heart season 12. There’s new challenges, secrets and of course, the same kind of romance you swoon over.
