BOOK COVERS WITH UNIQUE HOBBIES
Breaking out of the topic ask today, I’m doing something within the topic** but still my own thing. A few weeks ago I accidentally did a post about other non-bookish things I do so it feels very redundant to put another of those together on this day. Instead let’s look at book covers with hobbies on them! So anything that seems like it could be a unique or fun thing to try – and talk about whether I ever would try it!
10 BOOKS with UNIQUE HOBBIES
CHASING SHADOWS, LYNN AUSTIN
Bike riding is a hobby for many, but I know some take it more seriously, too. This said, well, I would imagine even people who take it more seriously consider it relaxing and a hobby in the sense of its something you pursue for fun. I grew out of biking after loving it as a kid. Goodreads
IF ALL ELSE SAILS, EMMA ST. CLAIR
How fun and cute does this one look? Seems like the most ideal summer read, but more than that, maybe this will finally be the book I read by beloved author Emma St. Clair. Also sailing can be a hobby, right? Would I try it? Only so far as being a passenger would entail! Goodreads
IS SHE REALLY GOING OUT with HIM?, SOPHIE COUSENS
This one not only seems like it could be fun (it follows a “disillusioned divorcee” who relinquishes a bit of control by letting her kids play matchmaker), but it also has hobby-ish things on the cover including fishing! As to if I’d try fishing… maybe! But I’d have to really like the reason I was doing it. Goodreads
PICKLEBALLERS, ILANA LONG
Don’t know much about this one except that its cover is darling and Goodreads readers don’t like this one! This could bode well for me since I don’t always love what the popular vote does. I’d be terrible at pickleball, but I would try it. Goodreads
THE GETAWAY LIST, EMMA LORD
Another one showing bike riders, plus the yellow and scene is just cute. Goodreads

THE SIREN of SUSSEX, MIMI MATTHEWS
Horseback riding can 100% be a hobby, right? I doubt it is in this novel, but so what. The goal with these lists is fun, so we should totally be having some! Goodreads
FAKE SKATING, LYNN PAINTER
Ice skating is the theme here and I saw someone on Instagram started doing this as a hobby earlier this year. Would I do it? Heck yes. Would I like it? Maybe not but as someone who used to be low-key obsessed with watching figure skating (haven’t in years now), well, I’d totally try. Goodreads
BY the BOOK, AMANDA SELLET
Someone sitting and reading a book can totally be considered a hobby! Goodreads
LORNA, DEBRA WHITE SMITH
I think the titular character in this, which is a contemporary mystery about “three bright amateur sleuths,” is actually a tennis pro making the depiction of playing tennis not exactly a hobby, but since tennis can be a hobby for many, I thought this cover fit what I was going for. Goodreads
FAIR GAME, ELIZABETH WHITE
This one has an archery target on the cover though I don’t think that’s what the story is about. Goodreads

Linking up with That Artsy Reader Girl October 14: Non-book Freebie (Come up with a topic that’s not bookish! You could share something about yourself like your hobbies, things you collect, fandoms you’re a part of, things on your bucket list, places you’ve traveled, things you’re proud you’ve accomplished, challenges you’ve overcome, your favorite recipes/sports teams/foods/etc. Or you could go down the less personal route and share your ten most visited websites, your favorite trends in fashion right now, the TV shows you’re obsessed with, etc. Or just have your pet guest post and share their top ten favorite things! Anything goes.)**
**NOTE: Technically, the below topic is the official topic for today! Jana made a change, and I didn’t catch that, so I’m going with what I had planned already.
October 14: Books I Wish I Could Read Again for the First Time (This week was originally scheduled to be a non-bookish freebie, but I realized how close it was to the last non-bookish freebie we did. If you’re super on top of it and already wrote your post for this week, post it anyway! If you’d rather do a non-bookish freebie, go for it!)

What a great idea. There are some great covers there. I had already planned mine too before the topic changed!
Here’s mine for this week: https://portobellobookblog.com/2025/10/14/top-ten-tuesday-14th-october-2025-ten-film-quotations-toptentuesday-amreading-bookrecommendations-tuesdaybookblog-booksky-%f0%9f%92%99%f0%9f%93%9a/
I had worked on / drafted mine already too! But hey we can revisit the changed topic at another time. :)
I used to go fishing as a kid; it was a family thing. But I never really enjoyed it. As for the fishing scene in the Cousens book, that is hilarious! I think I actually laughed out loud when reading it.

I’m so glad to know I have some good laughs ahead in Sophie’s book! Makes me even MORE curious to read it. I don’t think I’d love fishing, but if someone I knew loved it, I’m sure I’d be willing to try it. ;)
Good post, you have made me think! I would like to try knitting some time perhaps?

That’s fun! I used to do some crocheting but haven’t in YEARS now so I’d have to be learning all over again. :)
If All Else Sails is so good and I laughed a lot while reading it.
Love that! I’m all about books that keep the reader laughing. :)
What a brilliant, creative twist on the TTT topic! I really enjoyed looking at all the unique hobbies on the covers.
I’m especially intrigued by the one for *Pickleballers* (I’m now quite curious why the Goodreads readers didn’t take to it!) and I completely agree, I would love to try the ice skating shown on *Fake Skating*!
Great post!
Thanks, Teresa. I thought this was fun. :) I’d try pickleball (and also am curious why readers don’t care for it) and am curious about Fake Skating. It sounds fun and cute! :)
Archery sounds like a fun hobby.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
Right? I think so too!
I rode my bike regularly as a kid but I can’t remember the last time I did it as an adult. Riding a bike in a big city is much more dangerous than out in the country, although it is getting safer now that some streets have bike lanes. I do miss it, though. :)
I used to ride my bike ALL the time as a kid and it was one of those things where we’d tie flashlights to the handles and spend summer nights riding around the house. We lived in the country so while we always checked for any traffic, we didn’t always have a lot. :) Glad you are getting some bike lanes – maybe you can pick up biking again. :)
I love your list! This is so fun.
Thanks, Erin! It was fun. :)
I have a bike that I need to get out and ride more. I would try pickleball, my son plays and loves it. I have tried archery, and I sit and read a book quite often ;). Great tweak to today’s topic!
I would try archery (probably because it’s been in a couple movies I like) and my cousin’s wife said they’ve enjoyed pickleball. Someday I’ll try it (probably just when its passe ;D). Hope you enjoy riding your bike if you do again!
I will ride my bike again! I am determined. Right now, our house is for sale, so the bike is hanging from the garage ceiling, making it impossible for me to get down and ride. But, someday ;)
Maybe once you are settled in a new place you can! I’m sure moving / trying to organize a sale causes lots of extra work and involes things out of place, too. :)
For sure, we won’t talk about how many books I have packed up that I “wouldn’t” need, only to be like, where’s the book, LOL!
Another one of our constant bookish struggles, right? 😉
This is such a fun post idea so well done with coming up with it for this post :) Here’s my Top Ten Tuesday post – https://justreadjessie.blog/2025/10/14/top-ten-tuesday-books-i-wish-i-could-read-again-for-the-first-time/
Thanks, Jessie. It was fun to put together. :)
I have done many of these cover hobbies: sailing, tennis, ice skating (I’m not very good at this one but I love to roller skate!), fishing, but my favorites are reading and pickleball! A park near our home put in pickleball courts a few years ago. My husband & I thought we’d go try it out, and we loved it! It kind of reminds me of a cross between ping pong and tennis. I didn’t get a chance to play at all this year as I had major foot surgery in April. I’m looking forward to getting back into it next summer. You should try it, Rissi! It really is fun!
I’ve heard pickleball is SO fun and your description sounds very apt. My cousin’s wife talked about trying it when they visited. I also used to roller skate (in my driveway) a lot but haven’t for YEARS now. Maybe I should try it! :)
This is such a great post! I actually started archery as a hobby last year and it’s been a lot of fun! Also, reading is definitely a hobby too! :)
I feel like archery would be fun. Maybe it’s something someday I’ll try. :) I agree. Reading definitely works as a hobby!
I’ve only being ice skating once and it was when I was in third grade. I wasn’t very good, but I think I’d like to give it another go. Love watching figure skating as well.
I wouldn’t be good AT all (I’m not athletic) but still, sometimes it’s fun just to try something even if you look silly! As long as we have fun, that’s all that counts, right!? ;)
Oooh, I love your topic of choice! I haven’t read any of these although I’ve heard of the authors and have been wanting to try them. The featured hobbies only make them seem more interesting to me really!
I have SO many authors I’d like to try, too. That TBR is never ending, right!? ;)
