‘A MERRY LITTLE EX-MAS’: A CHAOTIC SEASON WITH ALICIA SILVERSTONE
It’s time to unwrap the first Christmas gift of 2025 from Netflix. It is A Merry Little Ex-Mas, and in addition to a funny story, it also has a popular 90s star sure to inspire viewer nostalgia.
A Merry Little Ex-Mas (2025) Netflix Film Review
One last, nice peaceful family Christmas is all Kate (Alicia Silverstone) wants for the season. She and her husband are now divorced (just make sure you call it an uncoupling) after many years as a couple, but together with Everett (Oliver Hudson), the plan is to have one final Christmas where everyone spends the season as a family.
This seems possible until it isn’t.
Everett soon shows up with his successful and pretty girlfriend (Jameela Jamil) which puts off the entire plan and leaves Kate scrambling for how to get through this very awkward togetherness.

In addition to the production quality usually being a “step up” from the hundreds of normal Christmas flicks you see this time of year, another thing Netflix does well is cast its films. They don’t always cast well-known names but when they do, it’s smart choices that probably work well with their key demographic, and certainly these choices fold in the nostalgia factor. This is definitely true of A Merry Little Ex-Mas. Not only do we see Alicia Silverstone playing a woman navigating drastic change in her life, but also you’ll see Melissa Joan Hart in a cute supporting role.

As for the story, there is good here too. The film is entertaining (aka silly) as one would expect but it also digs deeper into some of the things we all probably loathe having to face. Penned by Holly Hester, also on Hester’s credit sheet is the Netflix comedy The Royal Treatment, so you know there is humor here. All this means is if you like titles such as that or any other Christmas titles, then this one is an ideal one to add to your queue.
There’s joy even with some tears and A Merry Little Ex-Mas is, bottom line, darling. It’s worth streaming and letting yourself be entertained by (because le’ts be real, Christmas time often is chaotic) a film that perhaps doesn’t reinvent anything but is also fortunate enough not to have to. And honestly, it’s past time we recognize this.
Stream, at publication, A Merry Little Ex-Mas exclusively with Netflix

Content: some minor innuendo is present and there is a little bit of profanity but nothing terrible. If this bothers you, there is a same sex couple that is part of the story. There is also one played for laughs make out scene that has a character rubbing up against someone. The film rates TV-PG.

This sounds like a fun movie to kick off the holidays. It’s nice to see that Alicia Silverstone is in it. I’m looking forward to watching it! 🎄
It was a fun one (albeit silly as is normal of chaos comedies). Enjoy if you see it!
I watched this movie last night, and I thought it was kind of corny, but the characters were good. There were a few laughs here and there. Overall, I thought it was a fun movie to watch this season!
I know what you mean, Stephanie, but most of the time I go into these expecting silly, so that when (or if) I find something more, it’s a surprise. Like you say, it’s a fun seasonal movie. :)
