‘CHRISTMAS ON WINDMILL WAY’ CHALLENGES ONE BIG TROPE (AND I LOVE IT)

Part of the 2023 Great American Family lineup, Christmas on Windmill Way is a lovely festive watch.

Christmas on Windmill Way (2023) TV Film Review

Living and working in the town that her ancestry is deeply tied to is what makes Mia Meijer (Christa Taylor Brown) happy. She’s successful in her furniture business and managing the windmill that her family has owned for generations. She gets unexpected news when her grandmother, in an effort to solve her financial challenges, sells the mill with the promise their family will still manage it.

While still processing this and trying to prepare for the meeting as the mill’s manager, Mia gets her second shock of the day when the real estate developer turns out to be Brady Schultz (Chad Michael Murray), the ex she never fully forgot.

Any normal description you would use for a Christmas flick applies to Christmas on Windmill Way. However, there’s much to admire beyond just the festivities or the normal activities like a Christmas fair. The script is, for once, good. There’s some flubs here and there, and there may be some lines that don’t fit as they should, but the big arc works. Much to any avid Christmas movie viewer’s surprise, you’ll discover upfront honesty in this one, which eliminates (thank goodness) the expected miscommunication trope.

It’s like a breath of fresh air that is such a positive for this genre that any flaw in the movie still allows this one to stand above. From a first time screenplay writer, the film has the familiar face of Chad Michael Murray, and newcomer Christa Taylor Brown. I like them together and appreciate that this one is less about accusations (though it teeters on the edge of this), and more about making choices about the future.

One of the sweetest Christmas flicks I’ve seen from the year, this one is worth adding to your list of possible titles. It’s memorable for its genre, and I admire that it steps away from so much drama. christmas on windmill way

Content: Nothing to note. It’s a pretty standard TV-G Christmas movie rating.
