‘DOWNTON ABBEY: THE GRAND FINALE’ MATTERS (YES, YOU SHOULD SEE THIS ONE!)
Its prime theater run now past, the finale film that is Downton Abbey now makes its mark in streaming. The film, which is said to be the final one where we’ll see this generation of Crawley family made its mark in a theater run over the autumn and as it is now available for streaming home viewing, we’re going to look at a few reasons why Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale matters. Because, yes, sometimes pop culture things are important enough to take a second look at.
LIST | FIVE REASONS TO DISCOVER MASTERPIECE’S THE MAKING OF A LADY
‘DOWNTON ABBEY: THE GRAND FINALE’ MATTERS (YES, YOU SHOULD SEE THIS ONE!). Celebrating #DowntonAbbey as it (almost) arrives to streaming! Will you be watching this one this weekend? Share on XThis film is one of two in 2025 that actually inspired me to head to theaters. When I tell you that it’s been two years since I’ve been to a theater, this is quite true. Last film I saw (prior to summer 2025) was Barbie and while it’s not an experience I dislike, I genuinely don’t see theater release titles that make me want to see them. Needless to say, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is one that did and I’m so happy about this. The film, while bittersweet in many regards (for those of us who have been with the story from the start) is fabulous. It had a fuller (compared to most movies I see in my area) theater; earned applause; and brought out two ladies I chatted with in line who said they’d seen every film together, which is a fun memory to have together.
Creator Julian Fellowes has been quoted as saying that in this timeline with these characters, this is the last we’ll see of this Crawley family. He did tease the idea that perhaps someday we’d revisit Downton, just with a different group. For some of us, this finale didn’t suit, but I think if you’ve been with the franchise from the start, there would be no greater way to end this story. This is why this 2025 sequel matters… at least to the fans, even if not to the greater picture of pop culture. It is, however, a lesson in how to do the end of a pop culture franchise well. The writers understand their audience, and it shows.
All this to say, while the streaming debuts of films aren’t all equal, I think this finale, which is indeed grand, deserves an extra shout-out.
WHY DOWNTON ABBEY: the GRAND FINALE MATTERS
Spoilers to follow
THE BEGINNING
I love the way this film opens. Its first scene opens on the hustle and bustling bright lights of London which I think is a telling of change and that nothing is meant to be the same. It contrasts the normal of what we’ve seen in this series and the films prior to this.
THE COMEDY
This film has a great deal of good comedy. From the first 20 minutes (how can we not find Mary and her parents ducking beneath a stairway to hide funny?) to the little “IYKYK” quips, there is so much to smile and giggle over. These moments may be for the people who have been with the franchise from the very beginning, but there are also delightful moments that will charm new fans too. Even the moments of Robert trying to come to terms with so much change are funny in a wholesome way that makes us love him more.
MARY’S ARC and EDITH’S VOICE
If I’m honest, I know I’m probably one of the only people who like Mary, eldest daughter of the Crawley patriarch, Robert Crawley. I think she’s savvy and in moments, soft, but this is hard to see. I think the latter is something she grows into over the years, and the losses she’s suffered has helped with this. In this film, Mary doesn’t get the “happy ending” and while I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wish she’d end up with a partner (because yes I love a happy end), I think where we see her is in a good place. She’s about to encounter hardship again, but she enters this phase of life knowing that she has support not only from her parents, but also her sister, with whom she has shared a contentious relationship. They end as advocates rather than adversaries…

Speaking of Edith, my goodness! She is even more admirable in this film. The girl she was seems completely erased in this film and she is a confident, fierce woman who has found her voice, perhaps things she partly learned not only by becoming a mum, but also by having Mary as her sister, which let’s be real, had to teach her many things! She gets one scene in particular that is quite brilliant and cheer worthy.
THE NOSTALGIC MEMORIES
This film packs in the nostalgic memories. From those aforementioned running jokes, to the beautiful way this film ends, it leaves its characters and fans in a good place. Are there a few tears? Sure. But we leave with hope and high prospects for a good future, which is all any favorite franchise or story should do.

Some views, based on a review or two, didn’t like this and think this entire production isn’t a fitting way to wrap up a six-season and (with this one) three movie series. I think it exceeds expectations and is in fact gorgeous. So, all this to say, whether soapy or not (and yes this one is), thank you to the series that is Downton Abbey. It introduces us to all kinds of characters, and while some I like are loathed, I think we can all agree there is growth for everyone as we wave goodbye in this finale that lives up to its name.

Downton Abbey is an incredible series!
It certainly is – so dang entertaining! :)
Well done on your review, Rissi! I did see this movie in the theater as I wanted to experience this grand ending on the big screen. I have seen the entire series and all the other movies. This series is definitely a classic. In The Grand Finale I liked the humor, the nostalgia, the progression of each character…it was a fantastic finale. I especially liked the ending where Mary is standing in the house. As she looks around all the memories through the years flood back through her mind, and we get to see these as she experiences them. It was awesome!
I think I would watch another generation of Crawley family stories, especially if Julian Fellowes produces it!
I thought this, as a finale for this timeframe, was wonderful. Of course there could be more stories to tell, but everything has to end and I think seeing the writers / cast return and be able to PURPOSEFULLY end a story is where it’s at. The writers and cast sum everything up beautifully and I agree. That final scene with Mary is stunningly beautiful. :)
