THE ROMANCE, LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS IN ‘TWELVE DATES ‘TIL CHRISTMAS’

Over six episodes, varied relationships develop in Twelve Dates til Christmas. The story is called a limited series and does give us some sparkling romance plus a deeper connection. This through a love story we can (and do!) believe will last (because this is a Christmas HEA). Given that the series is now over, we are going to take a second look at the love story, romance, and relationships in this Twelve Dates ‘til Christmas collective list.

This is a story that is conventional for Hallmark but its length, and the production feels more lux than normal which elevates things. Based on a novel with a slightly different title, we meet Kate, a woman who enters a new dating experience when her best friend signs her up for a seasonal dating event that involves twelve dates with the goal of finding a person you want to have build a life with. Things of course don’t go smoothly, and yet, this series has so much charm and nostalgia it’s hard not to enjoy even with its few mistakes.

Let’s spotlight some of its best and very different relationships you’ll find in this series, and yes, romance, too! Also, as a careful warning, just know that there are spoilers below.

THE RELATIONSHIPS and ROMANCE of TWELVE DATES TIL CHRISTMAS list

THE FAMILY connections

Two relationships are her parents. With her father she shares the kind that can be infuriating (she worries and cares so much about him that they clash over his health, which has been poor at times) but is also the type that forgives, loves and has a strength she shares with no one else.

Her mother is someone who makes her defensive, and she’s got an adversarial bond with. This stems to the fact that Delilah prefers a string of boyfriends and travel to being with her daughter. But in this series, we see these two get to know each other more, and in some ways, they come to accept each other as they are. Of course, this does also come with some growth on both ends, but its balanced by the fact that they stop trying to make the other into an ideal.

FRIENDSHIPS that last

In Laura, Kate has a best friend who even with meddling always means well and loves Kate wonderfully. The series does a nice job of showing this, and while the pair have quarrels, the script also (realistically) shows that they can move forward too.

THE SPARKLING ROMANCE

Most of the enchanting romance in Twelve Dates Til Christmas comes from the connection Kate has with Richard. One that begins after she is stood up. Naturally this isn’t the happiest experience, but she moves on. Then her date, Richard, begins to text her and in an exchange a little bit flirty text messages the pair get to know one another; eventually, they share magical dates. Some of the moments are spontaneous when fate brings them together, but one is planned when Richard offers Kate a perfect redo of their first date. They also spontaneously spend a night out on the town experiencing the sparkles of the season.

Theirs is a romance full of sparkling moments and perfect experiences that many dream of having. Richard is also perfect on paper, and the kind of guy Kate decides she should choose.

TRUE LOVE and the BEST LAST FIRST KISS

When it comes to true love, Hallmark romances are ones we can believe last. In this case, her best match and the person the distrusting Kate learns she is willing to take a chance on is Callum. One of her best friends, and a guy whose long ago confession of love was brushed aside over misunderstanding, Callum still loves Kate.

The two of them quarrel over the fact that Callum doesn’t tell Kate about this, which brings up the discussion about this past and a kiss they shared all those years ago. Painful things come up and before they get to the heart of anything, words fail them. As any romance or love story is likely to do, we see these two come back together which viewers need to see even if the traditional happy end isn’t there.

Fortunately, this one is, and after conversation and confessions (including Kate getting unusually vulnerable), Callum turns and walks away. For a brief moment he not only breaks the heart of Kate, but ours. She stomps after him and finds him outside where he has created a magical outdoor space, wanting their kiss to be perfect and something to remember.

Whether she does or not is another story (though we suspect she does!), but we do. They film the kiss beautifully with its angles and the sparkling doodles that appear on the screen. The moment is the last first kiss between them and it’s the kind of scene happily ever afters thrive on.
