Putting out a winter sports story in 2026 is actually a great idea given that the winter Olympics are just around the corner. Netflix is capitalizing on this through their adaptation of Finding Her Edge, a binge release recently dropped on their platform. Its arrival is inspiring us to ask, what else like this is there to watch? From films to television shows, there are some fun watchalike titles to fit, so let’s take a look at what we can find.

This is also a show that, according to a few different online titbits, is a kind of loose retelling of Jane Austen’s Persuasion so that’s fun! From romance to more winter stories that involve winter sports, here’s the collection we found fitting our theme. So, all this to say, let’s see what we find!

THE BIG LEAP
Scott Foley featured in this “one and done” drama that aired on Fox. It’s not skating, but rather about dancers, and yet even at this, somehow seems like it could be something that is similar enough.

THE CUTTING EDGE, film series
There probably won’t ever be another title that “works” as well as the OG 90s dramedy The Cutting Edge. Despite the three sequels it inspired, nothing really comes close to the original movie which is heartwarming, funny (who remembers the whole “toe pick!” bit??) and yes, romantic too. The movie had D.B. Sweeney, a tough hockey player who is forced to reinvent himself, which materializes in the form of becoming half of a figure skating pair. His new partner (who has an attitude!) is Moira Kelly’s leading lady Kate.
From there the film is fighting mixed with shared bonding and overall, it’s just lovely and an ideal winter romance watch – or as would be true for me, a rewatch! I cannot remember for certain, but I don’t think any of the sequels made it to theaters, and instead aired on something like ABC Family (now Freeform).
Synopsis: Action and romance take to the screen when a self-centered ex-hockey star (D.B. Sweeney) and a prima donna champion figure skater (Moira Kelly) become unlikely partners in pursuit of Olympic gold. – MGM+ on Prime Video

ÉTOILE
From the creators of Gilmore Girls (aka Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino), this was a Prime Video release that did have a second season and then didn’t if memory serves. It follows an elite group of dancers who are part of a trade between two ballet companies, one in New York and the other in Paris. This is also the second dance show the Palladino team produced, the first being the two season Bunheads.
Synopsis: Set in New York City and Paris, the eight-episode Étoile follows the dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies, as they embark on an ambitious gambit to save their storied institutions by swapping their most talented stars. – Amazon MGM Studios Press

ICE CASTLES, 1978
I cannot remember if ever I’ve seen this 70s drama but it follows a figure skater who on the verge of a breakout in her career has a tragic accident that derails everything. While this is the more famous version (with an Oscar nod for a song), there is also a version from 2010 that remade this story.
Synopsis: A tragic accident dashes a young girl’s hopes and dreams of becoming a world-class figure skater. – Prime Video

LOVE on ICE
It’s been a long time since seeing this, but it originally airs (from what I remember) as a part of the winter program block on Hallmark. It also has the fan favorite Andrew Walker in the lead role.
Synopsis: Emily James (Julie Berman), a former Olympic figure skating hopeful who walked away from it all, now waits tables and teaches young kids to skate at the local rink. – Hallmark Media

MY LIFE with the WALTER BOYS, netflix series
If you want something that takes out the winter sports (though there is football scenes), but leans heavily into the love triangle, which Finding her Edge has, consider this one. Also an adaptation, this one has a teen girl, who loses her family, going to live with her mother’s best friend and the ups, downs and awkward love entanglements she has now living in a house dominated by, well, boys!
Synopsis: Following the loss of her family in a tragic accident, 15-year old Manhattanite Jackie Howard has to learn to adapt to a new life in rural Colorado with her guardian – and 8 very rowdy boys. – Netflix Media

SIDELINED: THE QB and ME and SIDELINED: INTERCEPTED
These are both Tubi original titles that follow football as its main sport but has the teen drama going for it and is also inspired by a young adult novel. It’s about a girl passionate about dance (so that kind of goes with skating, right?) and determined to make her future in this artistic sport. Until she starts to slowly fall for the stereotype jock quarterback… or is he?

This also produced a sequel that while still cute and really fun, it may not be something fans of ‘The QB and Me’ will want to watch if you prefer the ideal happy ending. Most of the cast returns and the story puts out more of a you-aren’t-my-dream scenario.
Synopsis: A headstrong dancer and a cocky quarterback fight against their feelings for each other as their post-grad future threatens to keep them apart. – Tubi

SPINNING OUT, netflix series
Only one season is what Spinning Out got. Ten episodes makes up that season as it follows a figure skating Olympic hopeful who struggles to balance everything from family, her own life and then also, romance, too! It also sounds like a more modern version of The Cutting Edge. The cast is pretty impressive to see and includes January Jones; Evan Roderick and Will Kemp (where are the Hallmark fans times two?); Willow Shields (The Hunger Games); Kaye Scodelario; and even 90s TV star David James Elliott. Also, according to online trivia (do we always trust this?), Emma Roberts was once attached to star.
Synopsis: Spinning Out follows Kat Baker (Kaya Scodelario), a talented, up-and-coming elite figure skater who’s ready to turn in her skates after a disastrous fall took her off the competition track. However, when she’s presented a second chance as a pair skater, she seizes the opportunity to continue her career and pairs up with talent pair skater and resident bad boy Justin (Evan Roderick). – Netflix Media

TINY PRETTY THINGS
No skating in this one-season two, but instead the stage is the competitive (and based on the little I know of this show) and dark world of professional dance!
Synopsis: Based on the book by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton, Tiny Pretty Things is set in the world of an elite ballet academy and charts the rise and fall of young adults who live far from their homes, each standing on the verge of greatness or ruin. As Chicago’s only elite dance school, the Archer School of Ballet serves as the company school for the city’s renowned professional company: City Works Ballet. The Archer School is an oasis for an array of dancers: rich and poor, from north and south, and a range of backgrounds. Yet they all share a rare talent and passion for dance, a loyal sense of community… and when it comes to their dreams, no Plan B. – Netflix Media
