‘WALK DON’T RUN’: A FAMOUS ACTOR PLAYS THE MATCHMAKER

Featuring a popular golden Hollywood star in a role we may not be familiar with (for him), Walk Don’t Run is actually another very entertaining title.

Walk Don’t Run (1966) Film Review

Tokyo is the latest stop for businessman Sir William aka Bill Rutland (Cary Grant). However, this business trip is different because it’s happening during the Olympics which leaves Bill’s early arrival minus a hotel room. This leads him to the front door of Christine Easton (Samantha Eggar), a woman who is advertising for a roommate in order to help shortage caused by the Olympic activities and tourists. Thing is, a distinguished older gentleman isn’t the type of roommate she had in mind.

A little finagling later, and they end up as temporary roommates, but then a third arrival complicates everything.

This film is, without question, one of the most entertaining of the old vintage classics I’ve recently seen. It could also be that I was just watching this one (which I think is my first time) at the most opportune time. The theme of the script and seeing it during an Olympic year, well, that’s fun. The movie is a good deal of fun because of its humor and good-natured characters.

However, the thing that makes Walk Don’t Run even more worth a watch is that Grant doesn’t play the usual characters he normally would in anything he headlines. I love this and the unexpected set up this film takes. It’s darling and works so much better than the direction I expected this to go; and I love that the movie surprises.

The cast is good and there are some genuinely heartwarming moments. The bottom line is this. Walk Don’t Run is worth watching. This is especially true if you like old Hollywood comedies, but if you don’t, it’s also good fun if you’re unbothered by the dated filmmaking. The whole shower bit is hilarious as is the trouble of the third person, too. The title may be contrary to this, but honestly, you may as well run to see this one. It’s worth it.

Stream, at publication, Walk Don’t Run with Tubi; or digitally purchase the film on places like Prime Video

Content: Although it’s all very PG, the film does have some innuendo. The idea of men and women living together is taboo and something that not everyone believes to be proper. There is innuendo and the idea that people must marry because of certain improprieties.
