SOME WINTER SPORTS MOVIES TO WATCH THIS OLYMPIC YEAR! #WinterMovies #WinterSports #IceSkating #Hallmark #FigureSkating #Olympics Share on XI’m thinking this list may be too similar to our list of Finding Her Edge watchalikes from a couple of weeks ago, but since I’m not limiting myself to just figure skating, I am hopeful to find enough different or additional titles to make this a bit more interesting. Let’s jump in and see what we come up with in this winter collection of sports movies, shall we?
FUNNY and ROMANTIC WINTER SPORTS MOVIES
CHALET GIRL
One of the titles I was always going to watch and never did, this one puts Felicity Jones in the role of former skateboard champion, and seemingly a bit of a rebel who joins an “elite” servicing company in the hopes of making extra money. This send her to Astria and likely, a place where she rediscovers her love of snowboarding.
Synopsis: An enchanting rom-com set in an exclusive ski resort. – Prime Video

THE CUTTING EDGE, film series
In its own way and lane, I feel as though this 90s dramady about an ex-hockey player and a “perfect” figure skater is a classic. It’s heartwarming and romantic and yes has that infamous “toe pick!” scene we all love! It’s also easily rewatchable.

This one did also inspire sequels about new characters which if memory serves debuted on TV. The three sequels are The Cutting Edge 2: Going for the Gold; The Cutting Edge 3: Chasing the Dream; and The Cutting Edge: Fire and Ice.
Synopsis: Action and romance take to the screen when a self-centered ex-hockey star (D.B. Sweeney) and a prima donna champion figure skater (Moira Kelly) become unlikely partners in pursuit of Olympic gold. – MGM+ on Prime Video

FINDING her EDGE
According to the Internet, this is a loose retelling of Persuasion, so that’s fun, and is also a series that just dropped (in January) on Netflix. Which means the marketing team knows the ideal time to put out a series given this is an Olympic year. The show follows a figure skater who must deal with the ups and downs of trying to move on with a new partner while having unresolved feelings for her last. This is also an adaptation of a YA novel.
Synopsis: The series follows the three Russo sisters, heirs to a struggling figure skating dynasty. As middle sister, seventeen-year-old Adriana trains for the World Championships with new partner Brayden, while still harbouring feelings for her first love and former partner, Freddie. Her life becomes complicated when she and Brayden pretend to be a couple off the ice so they can land a sponsorship to keep the financially struggling Russo rink afloat. – Netflix Media

FROZEN in LOVE
It’s been a long time since I saw this, but if I remember right, it was pure delight. Lots of laughs and good times in a film that is led by genre vets in Rachael Leigh Cook and Niall Matter. Of course, those of us who read also love that its heroine is a bookworm while Matter’s hero is a pro hockey player.

Synopsis: When struggling bookstore owner Mary and the bad boy of professional hockey, Adam, are teamed together to help facilitate an image makeover for the other, they soon realize that opposites attract. – Hallmark+

ICE ANGEL
I think I saw this now 25+ year old movie. Nicholle Tom, from The Nanny fame, stars as an ice skater who dies on the same day as a hockey player, and she is “reborn” in the body of the ice skater (after the skater goes to heaven and this is the hockey stars chance to redo everything). Real life figure skaters Tara Lipinski and Nancy Kerrigan also have roles.
ICE CASTLES
There are two versions of this film. The more “classic” 1978 title and then a remake in 2010, which I don’t think got a wide release and was either direct to DVD or aired on a network first. I know I’ve seen the more recent one but cannot remember if I’ve seen the 70s version. But fun fact, Colleen Dewhurst co-stars in it and so, all ‘Anne’ fans should want to see this one for that alone, right? In more facts, the 70s version had a Oscar nomination for best original song and two Golden Globes nominations, too.

Synopsis: A tragic accident dashes a young girl’s hopes and dreams of becoming a world-class figure skater. – Prime Video (1978 version)
Stream both the 1978 and 2010 versions of this film free (at publication) on Tubi TV; also find the 2010 version on Roku; or purchase either version digitally on places like Prime Video
ICE PRINCESS
This is a sweet Disney movie that follows a smart and brainy girl who finds a creative and beautiful new passion in the world of competitive figure skating. What makes this movie stand out is that the mean girl really isn’t mean in the ways her stereotype character would have her be. Kim Catrall, Trevor Blumas, Joan Cusack and the late Michelle Trachtenberg star in this one.
Synopsis: A brainy ugly duckling realizes her dream of becoming a champion figure skater with the help of physics, a disgraced coach, three snooty ice princesses, a chorus of stage parents and the hunky boy who drives the Zamboni. – Prime Video
Stream, at publication, with Disney+; or digitally purchase the film on places like Prime Video
LOVE on ICE
Synopsis: Former figure skating champion, Emily James, now 27 years old and considered a relic in the world of figure skating, gets an improbably shot to reclaim skating glory when a young coach sees greatness in her. – Hallmark+
Stream, at publication, with Hallmark+
THE MIGHTY DUCKS
This one is considered a classic and is about a lawyer whose community service forces him to coach a hockey team that is made up of young kids without much skill.
Synopsis: A tough trial lawyer gets a unique community service assignment: coaching a hapless group of pee wee hockey players. Can he turn the ragtag team into champs? – Prime Video
Stream, at publication, with Disney+ or Hulu; or digitally purchase on places like Prime Video
MIRACLE
I saw this one years ago but don’t remember details. It’s about the 1980s Olympic team and their shocking win over what is considered an “invincible” opponent team.
Synopsis: Miracle tells the true story of Herb Brooks (Russell), the player-turned-coach who led the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team to victory over the seemingly invincible Russian squad. – Prime Video
Stream, at publication, with Disney+; or purchase on places like Prime Video
SPINNING OUT, netflix series
Only one season is what Spinning Out got. Ten episodes makes up that season as it follows a figure skating Olympic hopeful who struggles to balance everything from family, her own life and then also, romance, too! It also sounds like a more modern version of The Cutting Edge. The cast is pretty impressive to see and includes January Jones, Evan Roderick, Will Kemp (where are the Halmark fans times two?), Willow Shields (The Hunger Games), Kaye Scodelario and even 90s TV star David James Elliott. Also, according to online trivia (do we always trust this?), Emma Roberts was once attached to star.

Synopsis: Spinning Out follows Kat Baker (Kaya Scodelario), a talented, up-and-coming elite figure skater who’s ready to turn in her skates after a disastrous fall took her off the competition track. However, when she’s presented a second chance as a pair skater, she seizes the opportunity to continue her career and pairs up with talent pair skater and resident bad boy Justin (Evan Roderick). – Netflix Media

TWO for the WIN
It’s been a long time since I would have seen this one, but as I remember, it’s quite charming. Plus, it has plenty of winter-y charm! It also has Charlotte Sullivan (who I don’t think has appeared in other Hallmark movies) and longtime genre leading man Trevor Donovan.

Synopsis: A world champion ski racer and local ski instructor find romance on the slopes as he returns home and prepares for the biggest race of his life. – Hallmark+
Stream, at publication, with Hallmark+
ZERO CHILL
This one sounds super cute if you don’t mind putting up with, what I will assume, is some childish silliness. This I say because this is marketed as a kid’s series. But it’s about a teenager who has to figure out how to rebuild her life when her family moves for her twin’s hockey sport.
Synopsis: ZERO CHILL is a live action kids and family series following 15-year-old figure skater Kayla as her life is up-ended from Canada to the UK, when her twin brother Mac gets a place at a prestigious ice hockey academy. Distraught at her parents’ decision to put her brother’s ambitions before her own, Kayla must find her place on the ice again and step out from the shadow of her superstar twin. – Netflix Media
