Period Drama Bliss: 14 Memorable and Swoony Proposals in Costume Drama
Stopping by here to share another list from Silver Petticoat! This time around, it’s 14 Memorable Period Drama Proposals. I know there’s LOTS I neglected, but for now, this is a start of favorites.
A while back IÂ took a look at some of the memorable proposals in film. Today, I return to this subject. This time around IÂ focus on memorable and swoon-worthy proposals in period drama, one of which is (of course!) the beautiful and dreamy scene from 2005’s Pride and Prejudice. The scene is set as the sun is rising featuring Kiera Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. The scene is one of “modern” cinema’s most romantic and so, with that moment in mind, take a look at this gorgeous scene below…
LIST | Romantic Comedy Bliss: 10 Memorable Proposals in Cinema
As we are all of a similar mind around here (about our shared love of period drama), saving this list for the latter half of the duo seemed prudent. It’s always fun to build up to what we love best and in the famous words of Dorcas Lane (of Lark Rise to Candleford), period dramas are my “one weakness.

PS: in the  meantime, I’ll leave you with these stunning quotes!
If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more. – Mr. Knightley
I offer you my hand, my heart. Jane, I ask you to pass through life at my side. You are my equal, my likeness… Will you marry me? – Mr. Rochester
How many of these do you know by these swoony photos alone? Discover the list in its entirety on Silver Petticoat Review, and comment down below letting me know which moments or scenes are among your favorites – and most importantly which make the romantic in you swoon? Tell me all of your favorites! I’d love to read about them.
Thank you for visiting! Come back soon.
Ahhh this list and THAT GRAPHIC with N&S! Love, love, love it. Though there are a couple on this list I've not seen! (Doctor Thorne and the Sense & Sensibility miniseries.)
There are simply TOO many such scenes not to make a list, right Courtney?! :) Likely I forgot some, but hey that's what the glorious words "part" and "two" are for. ;)
Doctor Thorne is pure sunshine. It's currently on Amazon Prime and coming to US DVD this fall (YES!). BBC's Sense and Sensibility is, in my ranking, a masterpiece. But I know it does rub some the wrong way. I hope you enjoy both, friend. :)
Ahh…i need to look up doctor thorne!
YES you do, friend. It's a delight from beginning to end. It's currently on Amazon Prime and comes to US DVD this fall. Let me know what you think if you see it. :)
The only one I haven't seen is Doctor Thorne–I started the miniseries, but I haven't finished it yet. Now I'm thinking I must :-) And there are a couple on the other half of the list I need to add to my queue, as well!
Doctor Thorne is delightful, Becky unless you like period dramas with a bit more drama and upheaval. But if you like nothing but happy? Then I think you'd enjoy it. :)
I REALLY want to see Doctor Thorne. You keep mentioning it and intriguing me. :) As for all the others, yes, yes, yes! (And I know N&S got a mention. As well it should! ;)
Doctor Thorne is SO sweet, Kara. I didn't realize it was a "thing" until I spotted it during one of my Amazon (UK) browsing trips so naturally when I spied it was from Julian Fellowes, there was no turning back. Hope you enjoy! :)
YES! All the mentions North & South gets is totally worth it.
My favorite proposal scenes are from North & South (love your above graphic), Emma (love both 1996 & 2009 versions), & Wives & Daughters (who knew proposing in the pouring rain a couple of feet away from each other could be so romantic?, lol, Justine/Anthony have such cute chemistry). Thanks for such a nice post
Hi, Tiffany! Thank you for visiting and leaving your comments on favorite proposals. I have SO many that it makes it tough to narrow down. Aww!! You’ve made me want to re-watch “Wives and Daughters.” I adore that miniseries, and look forward to being reminded of the beautiful love story. :)
Hi Rissi: thanks to your great recommendation of Moonstone, of course now I have to add Moonstone’s romantic proposal scene as a new favorite (with the rain in the background, so pretty), so sweet after all that sadness/heartache Rachel & Franklin had to go through
Even though Agatha Christie mysteries aren’t known to be romantic, but to me, The Moving Finger’s proposal was very sweet too, Jerry telling Megan that him taking care/looking after her, protecting her from harm, & making her happy is his new purpose in life was adorable, just like the 2 actors’ chemistry
…and again, you’re making me want to re-watch The Moonstone. :)
Aww! You’re right. Their entire story is one of my favorites, and I’ve re-watched all of the ITV versions multiple times. I too love them together. :)
