‘Project Christmas Wish’: One of the Most Impressive from Hallmark

It’s always nice to see familiar faces appear in the stories of a beloved network. But sometimes, what’s more fun is seeing newer faces take on roles that are genuinely lovely characters.

Project Christmas Wish (2020) Hallmark TV Film Review

Giving back is what makes Lucy (Amanda Schull) happiest. She’s at her best when she’s running her annual Project Christmas Wish benefit. Each year, she collects the wishes of her community, and hopes to fulfill all of them she possibly can. This year, her feature wish is from a little girl named Max. New to the town, Max (Averie Peters) wishes for the Christmases she used to have with her mother.

This causes her father, Lucas (Travis Van Winkle) to take stock of his own sorrow, and slowly, to open himself up again as he tries to give his little girl the best Christmas.

This is one of those movies that’s strength lies in its family ties. Penned by a trio of writers, this one features a newcomer, a writer who hasn’t written with or for Hallmark since 2016, and Joie Botkin, who not only has multiple 2020 Christmas credits but also is credited with films like My One and Only. The strong relationships between the characters (like between Lucas and his parents or Lucy and her mother) helps to make the script even better, and it’s already quite good. This one ups its quality, and while the end works towards a sappy conclusion, it’s also appropriate for the end Lucy wishes for.

Both Amanda and Travis have been in Hallmark productions before, but it’s been a while for both. Here they’re quite good, and I do enjoy them together. The dance scene is all kinds of charming as is their back-and-forth banter. It makes their romance equal points tender and flirty (in a very Hallmark kind of way, of course). There’s also a beautiful moment between them outside before it gets a bit emotionally “heavy,” but it’s still lovely.

Same goes for this film, Project Christmas Wish, as does anything else (or almost) I see on the network. The story is wonderful, and the giving nature of our leading lady is a reminder we all need sometimes. Plus, the romance isn’t too shabby, which is always a pro.
