14 SPOOKY (BUT NOT REALLY) ALL HALLOWS EVE MOVIES TO WATCH
Each year I put together a little list of spooky-ish movies, always with the disclaimer that I don’t join the October 31 festivities. I never have and don’t intend to. This is another new year, and so today we look at more spooky Halloween movies: 2021 edition.
LIST | 15 PERFECT MOVIES TO STAY IN AND WATCH FOR FALL
We may repeat some titles because one of these times I’ll simply run out of titles to include because, really, there are only so many titles we can feature. Still, I did find some that I don’t think are on my prior lists or at least aren’t prominently talked about around here. There’s costume drama and comedies, and some that in my mind, really are spooky! (But, yes, I know I’m in the minority with that thought.) Let’s take a look at the list, shall we?
If you think this list is missing key titles, check out our 2019 Spooky round up as well as our 2020 list, too.
SPOOKY HALLOWEEN MOVIES
1: THE ADDAMS FAMILY, 2019 ANIMATED
Finally watched this last year; it’s cute in its own way, but not a favorite animated flick.
2: CASPER
Despite this being a kind of cult classic, this is another I’ve never personally seen, again likely because I’m not into ghost creatures and such. However, I have to admit, Casper does look like a friendly ghost (and isn’t that what he’s known for?), so I’ll allow him the spot.
14 SPOOKY (BUT NOT REALLY) ALL HALLOWS EVE MOVIES TO WATCH #SPOOKYMOVIES #SPOOKYSEASON #CASPER #JOHNNYDEPP #PERIODDRAMA Share on X3: CLUE
Saw this on a list when I was browsing the Internet and despite not having seen it in a minute, my memory is that this 80s comedy is fun. It’s based on the board game, of course, so we have all the usual suspects in Col. Mustard, Miss Scarlett, and Co.
4: DARK SHADOWS
Watched this one years ago with (shocking to me even!) my mother who is less of a vampire person than I am. Wouldn’t watch it again personally, but if you like these kinds of films, you may enjoy seeing Johnny Depp in this.
5: HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS
Dark, creepy, and normally not my cup of tea, I did find this brother-sister supernatural flick pretty fun! Although beware, there’s lot of violence in this R-rated flick.
6: THE ILLUSIONIST
Despite it’s unusual storytelling, I do remember liking this Romeo and Juliet romance. The plot revolves around an illusionist who, after reuniting with his childhood sweetheart, worries about her being in an abusive relationship. spooky halloween movies
7: KNIVES OUT
Super disappointed in this “cozy” mystery, but I know a lot of people love the Daniel Craig film. Follows the family of a wealthy patriarch who, in the aftermath of his death, all fall under suspicion for his murder.
8: MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS
If you love Agatha Christie, this big screen adaptation of the Poirot story may be for you! Follows a by-the-books investigator with an all-star cast of suspects, all of whom are confined to a train!
9: THE PALE HORSE (BBC)
I haven’t seen the new adaptation from Amazon for this (though have read its mediocre), but I do like the BBC adaptation that works the Miss Marple into the story.
10: THE PRESTIGE
Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman lead the cast in this (what I call) spooky period drama. As I remember, its conclusion is also a very troubling one.
11: SLEEPY HOLLOW
Honestly I’m not one for horror-esque or R-rated titles, but lots of people seem to watch this Johnny Depp film, so I figured I’d add it if you were interested.
12: TWITCHES
Believe it or not, and despite my many Disney movies, I don’t think I’ve ever watched this Disney Channel film with the Mowry twins; probably because I’m not into witch-y stories. Still, it sounds light-hearted and cute. spooky halloween movies
13: WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION
Finally watched this Agatha Christie production; there’s no supernatural component, but it does have some creepy vibes, and certainly is a dark story both in atmosphere and storytelling.
14: VICTOR FRANKENSTIEN
Started this one quite a while ago, and honestly, I cannot remember if I finished it or not. I feel like I probably didn’t, but please, don’t hold me to this. The plot follows the volatile relationship between Frankenstein and the young man he transforms into a gentleman.

I loved The Prestige and we actually just watched it again recently! We also really enjoyed Knives Out and have watched that a couple times, too. It will be interesting to see what they do with the sequel.
I’m curious about the Knives Out sequel, too! Oh, and I want to re-watch The Prestige as well as The Illusionist. I feel like they’re kind of similar and released around the same time, but also they seem like good “autumn-esque” re-watches. :)
Sleepy Hollow was such a good film!
I never did see it but I know SO many people have loved it and it’s a tradition to watch this time of year. :)
Clue is one of my favorite cult classics. Not many people knew it existed until Knives Out was released, as they were compared to one another. I haven’t watched Knives Out yet, but I hope to soon.

It’s been a long time since I watched “Clue,” but I do need to again. Hope you enjoy “Knives Out” when you see it, Pam. :)
I keep hearing good things about Knives Out, but I still haven’t gotten to it.

Happy TTT!

Hope if/when you do see “Knives Out” that you enjoy, Lori – and if you do see it, let me know what you think. :)
I enjoyed Knives Out (didn’t realise it was meant to be a cosy mystery though lol) but I didn’t realise there was going to be a sequel! Or maybe I just forgot 😅 I’m not much for spooky movies either but have seen one or two of these. The Illusionist sounds great!
Well… maybe not. That’s just how I tag it. ;) I’m curious about the sequel despite not loving the first movie. :) The Illusionist is really interesting. I feel as though it did take about two viewings before I fully caught everything relating to the, well, illusion! :)
I like this list. I am not into creepy/spooky things, but I think I could handle most of the ones on this list. We recently watched Sister Sister with our kiddos and I think it would be fun to see the Mowry twins in Twitches!
Aw, how fun! I saw the “Sister Sister” TV show on one of the streamers and mentally added it to my eventual watch list. I FINALLY watched Sabrina the Teenage Witch this year and am working through Blossom so I could use another 90s TV show. :)
Family Matters is another good one, LOL!
I used to watch that one, too. I think it used to be part of a Friday night “family” TV block. Definitely would re-watch some episodes because nostalgia! :D
I’m yet to watch Murder on the Orient Express, thanks for the reminder to do so.
Happy reading!

Let me know what you think when you do, Stefani! :)
Love this list, and totally agree with you about The Addams Family adaptation. Not necessarily my favorite, but it was cute.
For sure! And I’m all about cute “spooky” movies since I don’t like horror stories. :)
Ooh, thanks for this post. I need some stuff to watch in the next few days. I finished all the shows I was partway through and now don’t know what to do with my life. :)
YAY! *bites nails* Hope you found something fun, AJ! :)
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters was so much fun. But also – no Beetlejuice? :D
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
It was fun – and I was surprised by how fun I thought it was! Do you know, I did ALMOST add “Beetlejuice” because SO many love it. But since I know next to nothing about it, I did leave it off. Content for next year I guess! :D
Sleepy Hollow, The Prestige, and Knives Out are some of my favorites. :)
Lauren @ Always Me
YAY! Gotta’ love when seeing favorites on lists (or I do :D) – one of these days I should watch “Sleepy Hollow.” Thanks for visiting, as always, Lauren.
