It’s Sweetest Day in the part of the world I’m from, and while it doesn’t mean anything in the larger scope of holidays or special days, but you know, in this space, when there’s some kind of romance-y day, one cannot help but use it for fun. The definition (according to a simple search) says “It is a day to share romantic deeds or expressions, and acts of charity and kindness.” So really, it’s more than just romance. But as we’re all about favorite romances, that’s likely our focus. So, with that lengthy opening, let’s look at favorite and cute sweetest day moments. Just for fun-sies.
LIST | 20 Kind of Spooky (but Not Really) & Fun Movies: 2020 Edition
Below I’m sharing a few moments from film or TV shows that seem small and insignificant, but are actually quite sweet and really, romance-y in a small but touching way. Or who knows, maybe I’ll throw a couple moments of charity on the list, just because! Let’s jump in.

1: ARTHUR from UNFINISHED SONG
This entire film is really sweet and about a man doing something he’s uncomfortable with to honor the woman he deeply loved. Find digitally on Amazon Video
2: JANE BENNET & MR. BINGLEY from PRIDE & PREJUDICE
THE SCENE: Bingley invites Jane to stay…
Of course, had Bingley let Jane ride off back to her home without staying, likely we wouldn’t love him in the least! Still, the fact that he insists she stay after an afternoon spent socializing at his home, and with her coming down with a cold is still, not to be underrated. 3: MR. DARCY & ELIZABETH BENNET from PRIDE & PREJUDICE
THE SCENE: Darcy helps protect the Bennet family…
Some may bemoan this because they’re all about feminism, but I think Darcy’s care in helping to track down Lydia and ensure the Bennet name not only speaks to the depth of his feeling for Lizzie, but just in general how kind a person he is. Even if he does hide it underneath gruffness. Find the 2005 adaptation digitally on Amazon Video

THE SCENE: “You must allow me to tell you…”

I adore the first proposal scene in the 2005 adaptation. I feel like it does a GREAT job putting a fresh perspective on the scene and find it funny and ironic that in this, Darcy appears more approachable than Firth’s more uptight perspective. Also, I think it’s Lizzie who is WAY harsher in this moment than Darcy, and also love that his reaction seems truly contrite and concerned rather than aloof. 5: JANE EYRE & CHARLOTTE BURNS from JANE EYRE
THE SCENE: Jane experiences kindness.
For her entire young life, orphan Jane Eyre doesn’t experience kindness or friendship. Then she is sent to a dark, dreary school where she meets Helen Burns, the first person to show her any kindness and extend friendship. Sadly theirs is one that has an unhappy end, but for those Jane sees what it’s like when someone cares. Find digitally on Amazon Video
6: KATHLEEN KELLY & JOE FOX from YOU’VE GOT MAIL
THE SCENE: Soup and daisies.
It may be safe to say that Joe shows up at Kathleen’s door with some kind of ulterior motive, but I have to admit (despite my mediocre feels for this film), his bringing her daisies is pretty cute. Find digitally on Amazon Video
7: LEO AND PAIGE COLLINS from THE VOW
Back when this film was new, it seems familiar that I read about some viewers who didn’t like Leo’s choice. I think it’s lovely. It hurts him deeply, but I also think it shows that he loves Paige more than what he wants. Find digitally on Amazon Video
8: LOVE SARAH (MOVIE)
THE SCENE: The whole story
This is really one of those movies that’s entire plot is a kind of kindness. It’s about honoring someone, but also building a future. There’s something really sweet about it (plus it’s full of sweets, too) but it’s also one of of those fully British kind of movies meaning it’s slow moving and is more about dry wit, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t good. Find digitally on Amazon Video
9: ANNE SHIRLEY & GIL from ANNE OF GREEN GABLES
THE SCENE: Gil gives up an offer for Anne
In order for Anne to remain close to family, Gil gives up a teaching position that will allow Anne to remain home and take on the position. This is not just a testament to their friendship, but also to the way Gil loves Anne. Find on Amazon via DVD set or at publication with Gazebo TV
10: TRAVIS & GABBY from THE CHOICE

Really, it’s this entire movie I’m thinking of when using the description of Sweetest Day where it talks about deeds, acts of kindness, and the like. The plot revolves around a man who waits for the woman he loves a long time, never giving up on her or the strength of their love. It’s a charming story. Find digitally on Amazon Video
BONUS! CINDERELLA

Cinderella’s act of kindness and forgiveness towards her stepmother and step-sisters (who never show her any kindness) show the kind of good person she is, and should remind us of the kind of life we should strive to live. Find digitally on Amazon Video
