SORT OF SPOOKY & FUN MOVIES + WHERE TO SEE THEM: 2022 EDITION
Ok, so here’s the thing and a confession. Every year I think, this is the year I don’t create a mystery and spooky movie list (or insert whichever season or holiday you want). Yet each year I continue despite it being harder and harder to dig into movie titles and come away with enough a list to make. Same goes for this year and here we are, putting into the work.
LIST | MOVIE AND TV CHARACTERS WITH ACADEMIC ASPIRATION WHO MAKE SCHOOL COOL
👻SPOOKY & FUN MOVIES + WHERE TO SEE THEM: 2022 EDITION👻 MOVIES WITH SPOOKY(ISH) THEMES. #MICHELLEDOCKERY #DANSTEVENS #PERIODDRAMA #SPOOKYMOVIES #FALLMOVIES #OCTOBER #GHOST Share on XThat’s where we are as we begin our list, and while I don’t expect to have an extensive new list this year, at least it gives me an excuse to feature our previous lists! Because sometimes it’s fun to browse those and see the titles I didn’t have as difficult a time compiling. Nonetheless, it’s kind of a challenge to continue putting these together and interesting to see what I can find.
Note: before going on, I do also want to say. My goal is to always provide a variety of options in any list like this. This means an array of genres or ratings even inside a specific topic. Same is true of this spooky movie list. Where some may seem not to fit, it’s true they might not in a traditional sense. So for me, while I may use the work “spooky” (which we usually associate with ghosts or supernatural), some titles are more about “mind games” meaning it’s more a thriller than supernatural. Yet in my mind, they fit the “atmosphere” of the fall season and since I’m not a horror movie person, this is what I look for. All this to say, some of these may not be conventional, but that’s just how we are here.
MYSTERY SPOOKY MOVIE LIST
BLITHE SPIRIT
Lighter but using a spirit or “ghost,” this period drama features quite the cast including Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens. The plot is a kind of silly comedy that goes places I don’t anticipate and honestly, it’s more of a failure because of the way it ends. Find, at publication, with Showtime
CORALINE
I didn’t finish this one, but by all accounts, people do say there is some “creep” to this one for being an animated film. The animation they use is neat and has all kinds of textures as is the smoky atmosphere of the setting which adds to the aesthetic. It follows a girl who discovers a world inside the walls of her house where there’s almost an alternate reality she can live. Find, at publication, this streaming with Roku mystery and spooky movie list
DEATH ON THE NILE
This one is definitely one of those nontraditional titles. No ghosts, but more thriller in nature and honestly, though there is plenty of night scenes, the coloring of this one is brighter than say its predecessor Murder on the Orient Express. The cast is pretty dang good though. Find, at publication, streaming with Hulu
DRACULA UNTOLD
Honestly between Van Helsing and Victor Frankenstein, I cannot remember if I started to watch this film or not. Luke Evans stars as a man who realizes he must protect his family when an enemy wants to build an army and is willing to use boys to do this.
RED RIDING HOOD
👻SPOOKY & FUN MOVIES + WHERE TO SEE THEM: 2022 EDITION👻 MOVIES WITH SPOOKY(ISH) THEMES. #MICHELLEDOCKERY #DANSTEVENS #PERIODDRAMA #SPOOKYMOVIES #FALLMOVIES #OCTOBER #GHOST #SPOOKYSEASON #SPOOKYMOVIES #MOVIES #MOVIELIST #PERIODROMANCE… Share on XAmanda Seyfried stars as the fabled character on her way to grandmother’s house. Only in this film, things take a more sinister and adult turn as she is caught up in a possibly dangerous love triangle.
SECRET OBSESSION
Another thriller film, this one is easy to figure out, but still manages to “play” with the viewer a bit. This because it’s a psychological thriller about a woman whose lost memory means she doesn’t know if she’s safe or still in danger. Find on Netflix
THE TURN OF THE SCREW
Described as “haunting,” this is an adaptation of Henry James story, this 2009 BBC adaptation has Michelle Dockery and Dan Stevens in roles prior to their iconic Lady Mary and Matthew roles from Downton Abbey. Honestly I have seen this one (I checked and there is review evidence) but I reviewed it back in 2018, and don’t remember it. That said, it seems fitting as it follows a governess haunted by her life caring for two children. Find, at publication, streaming with BritBox mystery and spooky movie list
WINCHESTSER
Loosely inspired by actual events, this follows a real person in history named Sarah Winchester. Widowed and trying to co-run her husband’s business, she lives in a home under construction 24 hours a day where she believes the victims of her husband’s products haunt the house. Helen Mirren stars as the titular character.
can you tell, we have some “spooky” reviews to come in October!?

Great mix of spooky films! I’ve seen some but not all of them. I’m probably going to watch Death on the Nile over the Christmas period when I’m staying at my mum’s as we both like whodunnits.
Oo, fun! It’s always more fun to have a film to watch with someone as a kind of anticipatory thing. :) Thanks for visiting, Elena.
Great list! I would love to watch a few Agatha Christie films (but only after I’ve read them). I did watch Crooked House with school and that was quite something in places!
Love this topic!

I haven’t read any Agatha Christie novels. However I should since I really like the adaptation. :) Thanks so much for visiting, Zoe!
Aaah yea! A few new, fun but scary stories to take a closer look at!
I am definitely interested in Blythe Spirit and Winchester. I haven’t seen the latest adaptation of The Turn of the Screw, need to watch that as well!
Have a fun Halloween!

I did like (mostly) “Winchester.” Definitely an interesting story though not an ending I 100% love. Thanks so much for visiting, Mareli. As always.
Coraline was on our list, too!
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
YAY! First time I saw the film was this year so I had to include it. :) Thanks for visiting.
I haven’t seen that adaptation of The Turn of the Screw, but now I want to. It’s such a good story in general.

Good to know! It’s been a while since I watched it, so I’m due for a re-watch. :) Thanks for visiting, Lydia.
oh this is a fun list! I need to watch Death on the Nile!
I need to re-watch it. I remember thinking Orient Express was better at the time, but I should watch them closer together. :) Thanks for visiting, Carrie!
A good list. I want to watch Death on the Nile and Coraline and a few others. Maybe one day…
Have a great week!

I just saw Coraline for the first time this year, Emily. So I’m not that far ahead in seeing that one. :) Let me know what you think if you see either one. Thanks for the visit.
I’ve only seen Death on the Nile and Coraline on your list. I don’t remember much about Coraline, but I remember it being creepy. I found Death on the Nile, okay, but I preferred Murder on the Orient Express.

Coraline is creepy. At least to me it is. It’s not so much the visuals as it is the idea of the story. But at least it has a good ending. :) I think I prefer Orient Express too. Pretty sure that one is on my other list from a prior year though. Now I want to re-watch it! :) Thanks for visiting!
I don’t think I have seen any of these…maybe Coraline…Have a great week!
I just saw Coraline for the first time this year. :) Thanks so much for visiting, Cindy.
Great list! Death on the Nile is one I’d love to see.
Have a great week!
Let me know if you see Death on the Nile, Sara. :) Thanks so much for making time to visit here.
I saw Coraline a while back but it was so long ago that I can’t remember if I enjoyed it or not! I read the book a couple of years ago though, and it was a fun read.
Good to know you liked the book, Jo! I always forget that Coraline is a book. :) Thanks so much for visiting. As always.
