MEETING ST. NICK! A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE FICTIONAL MEN IN RED

by

We all have a favorite St. Nick fictional character. Some are more iconic than others, but there are countless actors out there who have brought to life the antics and characteristics of the “big man in red.” Resulting from this, today let’s feature some of our favorite Santa Clause characters, just for fun.

I didn’t grow up with the lore of Santa in my life. It wasn’t something my parents brought me up with and honestly, I cannot remember as a child wondering about it. Maybe I did, either way, I’m in no way worse off for having not believed in a fictional character. Still, every year, it’s inevitable that Mr. Claus will show up as some sort of character in a Christmas film, and we all know I watch a few too many of those. So, let’s meet some of the better or more beloved Santa Claus characters, shall we?

FAVORITE SANTA CLAUS CHARACTERS

1: TIM ALLEN AS SCOTT CALVIN from THE SANTA CLAUSE

We all love Tim Allen as the scrooge-y newly divorced dad who, through a series of events, quite unwittingly becomes THE Santa Claus. Allen has that perfect quality in his acting to be gruff, but of course, he can also pull off being a “softie” quite well. Also it’s been years since I saw this one, do we think it’s time for a re-watch?

2: RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH AS KRISS KRINGLE from MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET

I already gushed about why I love this 1994 adaptation of Miracle on 34th Street this year, so best not rehash that, however I will add Attenborough as a serious and ideal good Mr. Claus. He’s got all the right qualities to be a great Santa. At least I think so.

3: JAMES COSMO AS FATHER CHRISTMAS from THE CHONRICLES OF NARNIA

Adding this name and film may be an oddity since this part of the film is so dang brief. However I think this entire scene is charming and lovely and the actor does a good job of capturing that “magic” in this brief span of time.

4: CHARLES DURNING AS SANTA CLAUS from MRS. SANTA CLAUS

It’s been years since I’ve seen this one so maybe I’m forgetting something that would say he’s a “bad” cinematic Santa. He’s also not in the film much as I remember because this film is mostly about Angela Lansbury’s Mrs. Claus.

5: DAVID HUDDLESTON AS SANTA CLAUS from SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE

Never saw this one, but someone else said that Huddleston’s portrayal of Santa in this 1985 film is very traditional so we’re adding him because, that’s our favorite kind of Santa!

6: LESLIE NIELSEN AS SANTA from ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS

Used to watch this one all the time. Leslie Nielsen isn’t someone I’d typically think of in this Santa role, but he’s good and fun, plus he shares some cute scenes with Thora Birch’s character, a girl who insists on believing in the fabled figure.

7: KURT RUSSELL AS SANTA CLAUS from THE CHRISTMAS CHRONICLES

Never did watch this Netflix original but it has a sequel now and it seems like Russell wouldn’t be a bad Santa. Have you seen this one, and if so, do you like him in the role? Find streaming with Netflix

8: GEORGE WENDT AS SANTA CLAUS from SANTA BABY

Most TV movie Santa’s are a bit “too much” or underwhelming. George seems to do a better job than most in this cute ABC Family (now Freeform) movie about a woman who returns home to fulfill Christmas duties when her dad becomes ill.

Your turn! Who did I woefully neglect? Which St. Nick is your favorite from the cinematic world? Does any one actor stand out as being “THE” Santa Claus? Comment all of your favorite Santa Claus characters down below.
