POP CULTURE NEWS EDITION 17: CHARACTER CHANGES, DISNEY NEWS AND MORE

Friday we love to take a look at some of the pop culture stories we’ve seen throughout the week and collected at the back of our minds. In our ‘pop culture edition seventeen’ installment, I quite like some of these stories. There’s fun and good, and hopefully some good things coming in one of my favorite fictional worlds.

As is the norm of each week, there’s finally some TV news I’ve been dying for, there’s a more personal-ish related mention (so cool!) and of course, other things, too. Let’s get this thing rolling and look at the news of this Friday.

POP CULTURE NEWS EDITION SEVENTEEN

1: “WE’RE THE ARISTOCATS!”

Anyone else watch (over and over and over again) Disney’s animated flick The Aristocats as a kid? No? Just me then? It’s been announced through Deadline that Disney will produce a live-action version of the 70s animated flick. While I’m curious, I’m doing my best to reign in my opinion since some of Disney’s live-action films did disappoint and I don’t see that changing based on the current trajectory of entertainment.

Will Gluck (Peter Rabbit 2) will co-pen the script.

2: JANE… IN AUSTIN?

This is SUCH fun news, which is there’s rumors that there could be a TV series based on the novel by Hillary Manton Lodge, Jane of Austin. Deadline reports that Charlie Matthau has acquired the rights and is on the hunt for a writer. The novel follows two sisters as they must move to Austin in order to live within their newly minted changed circumstances. If the plot sounds familiar, it’s because this is a loose re-telling of Sense and Sensibility.

On that personal (albeit silly note!), the article on Deadline mentions Hillary as being an INSPY award winner. This is just a fun thing for the little INSPY award program to have a mention in an article like this. While we may not be in operation right now, it’s still cool. Thanks for the shout-out, Deadline! And thanks for the share, Rel.

3: MS. GREEN NO MORE

More controversial than fun, I’m SO over companies changing everything about their marketing in efforts to “include everyone” only to then turn around and exclude someone for their faith or different political beliefs (and yes, I’ve seen this happen just this week). This is why reading about what Mars is doing to their lineup of fictional M&M characters is a little annoying. They’re doing away with their “sexy” (their word, not mine) green M&M character in order to create a more casual one. At the very top of my list is who cares! These are candy and fictional at that, but secondly I will say this.

By creating the green character to be someone to “relate” to, they are also doing away with a character that x amount of the population already relate to. I haven’t seen an M&M commercial in years let alone bought the candy, but as I remember, I always thought she was hilarious. She had sass. Plus, she always had this attitude of indifference to her male M&M friends, in a kind of “why?” way.

It’s just something that seems counterproductive to their reasoning and messaging as to the “why” behind the shift.

4: TV NEWS TIDBITS

Here’s a few quick little TV hit items:

  • CBS’ Bull will end in May. Not sure how the story will end especially since I haven’t watched for about two years. But Weatherly cites his desire to “pursue new creative challenges” according to TVLine.
  • Also, in another tidbit, Erin Krakow (star and producer) reports that season nine of When Calls the Heart will further develop her relationship with Lucas saying, “We’ve seen the fire burn between these two for years, and this season (premiering March 6) is no exception! Lucas and Elizabeth are finally getting to explore and enjoy their relationship. We’re also getting to see Lucas in a new light — as father figure to Little Jack, who absolutely adores him!” I’m way over WCTH and haven’t watched for multiple years, and though I’ve “kept up” through spoilers and the like, I don’t see myself watching anytime soon. Based on what I see, I think the writers did a poor job with Elizabeth’s new romance.
  • Old news I forgot to mention is Hallmark star, Jen Lilley signed a “multi picture” (four) exclusive deal with GAC Media. This follows in the footsteps of former Hallmark stars Danica McKellar and Trevor Donovan!
  • One little reunion… on her new show Good Sam, Sophia Bush will reunite with her One Tree Hill co-stars Hilarie Burton and Bethany Joy Lenz. They’ll guess star as sisters on Bush’s NBC drama in an “upcoming episode.”
  • CW’s re-boot of Walker is seeing “series highs.” Could be good news for its future, right?
  • They’re coming back, you guys! I am thrilled to finally see a trailer for Netflix’s Sweet Magnolia’s. They dropped their trailer revealing (I guess?) who was in the car, some dramatic romance (please be ok Maddy and Cal!), and maybe even an illness??? Take a look and let me know what you think!
  • Also, Netflix released its numbers showing a bad stock drop in a “two year low.” However, they’re raising prices in 2022, so… wonder how that will help them?
  • On this week’s The Spillover podcast, we get conversation between its host Alex Clark and her guest Alexa Vega. I really enjoyed listening to this, and learning more about Alexa’s journey with her faith and some of her long held convictions. Definitely a great listen.

Your turn! What news-y things did you read about and like? Did you see any of these through the week? What are your thoughts on any of these? Comment all the comments… let’s chat.

Thank you for visiting! Please, do come back soon.
