POP CULTURE NEWS EDITION THIRTY-THREE: FIRST LOOK + HALLMARK NEWS
Friday is here and we’re here to chat all the things pop culture news edition thirty three. It’s honestly tough to find much this week that is interesting, but I did find a couple stories, a random thing that makes me happy and something sad. But then we love a little happy on a Friday.
LIST | ONE RANDOM QUIZ + A LIST: SOME OF OUR FAVORITE MOTHERS FROM TV
Let’s dig right into the network TV news, but first, the one thing that made me happy. Here we go.
POP CULTURE NEWS EDITION THIRTY-THREE
1: ALL THE NEW MUSIC
POP CULTURE NEWS EDITION THIRTY-THREE: FIRST LOOK + HALLMARK NEWS #NEWMUSIC #RAELYNN #HALLMARK #HALLMARKIES #NEWSHOW #MAGNUMPI #VIRGINRIVER Share on XLast night at midnight, country star RaeLynn released two new songs. I’m quite excited as in recent months I’ve grown to love her album Baytown and tracks like ‘God Made Girls’ or ‘Love Triangle.’ Her two tracks on this release are ‘If God Took Days Off’ (telling a story of the beauty we wouldn’t experience if He did) and ‘I Love My Hometown’ (feels very country). I’m here for this and hoping to hear more!
2: FIRST LOOK FROM NETFLIX
A fourth journey to Virgin River is coming from Netflix, and despite seeing the third season (YET), I’m ready for this. I’ve read some spoilers so I know what’s to come. The big tease in this first look is all about a “big question” for Mel.
The series will roll its twelve episodes out on July 20.
3: NO MORE WEEKLY HAWAII TRIPS IN A RED FERARI
Quite unexpectedly, reportedly, CBS opted yesterday to cancel Magnum P.I., meaning it won’t return for a fifth year. I haven’t watched much of its fourth year yet, but have to confess, this is disappointing. It’s one of the better shows on TV currently, and I’m wondering, why. Even series star Jay Hernandez was optimistic pre cancellation or renewal news. He said they’re popular “internationally” and the episode he directed had already caused an invite to direct next season. On Twitter, Hernandez shares:
All good thing must come to an end. We made memories I’ll be forever grateful for and thanks to each & every one of you for going on this wild ride with us. It’s all love. Until next time.
Do you think there’s any chance another network or streamer may pick it up?
4: PRIMETIME SERIES COMES TO HALLMARK
Hallmark has picked up a new primetime series called The Way Home. The series is expected to film this summer with casting announcements to come, and is executive produced by the mother daughter duo of Heather Conkie and Alexandra Clarke, who are also involved in Heartland. So that sounds promising if you like wholesome stories. In addition to probably being an emotional drama, it is reported this will have a time travel element too, and to me, it reminds me a bit of Good Witch. It’s early plot reads as follows:
“Kat Landry, her 15-year-old daughter Alice and Kat’s estranged mother Del are all strong, willful and independent. More than 20 years prior, lifechanging events created a chasm in their family that time has yet to repair. Kat and Del still aren’t on speaking terms. Alice has never met her grandmother and is unaware of the reasons for their fractured family. When the three generations come together under one roof for the first time in more than two decades, a surprising discovery unexpectedly sets the trio on a path toward healing and helps them find their way back to each other.”
LAST THINGS
- Lucy Hale is set to star in a new romantic comedy post The Hating Game called Which Brings Me to You. The film is about a woman who meet’s a man named Will at a mutual friend’s wedding and after a hookup, both assumes that’s it until they open up and share heartbreaks and more. Doesn’t honestly sound like it’s one I’ll enjoy because the plot tends to make this sound like an R-rating and those have to be really good for me to watch.
- Netflix dropped a WWII period drama called Operation Mincemeat in which you can see both (most iconic) Mr. Darcy’s in roles. Colin Firth and Matthew McFayden team up in this story about two men who try to end the war.
- Amazon and Lionsgate plan to make A Simple Favor sequel with Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick. The film followed a mom blogger who’s friend disappears.
- Rumor has it, Jack Ryan will end its Amazon Prime series with its fourth series.
- Elon Musk has been his Twitter deal “on hold” because he wants to confirm if Twitter’s base is really “only” 5% bot accounts as is the reporting. He reportedly has reason to believe it’s greater. He says he’s “committed” to the deal.
- Jennifer Lopez will EP a new limited series based on Rogers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. The project will supposedly be an original take on the material written by Rachel Shukert.
- Zac Efron was asked about returning if ever there’d be a High School Musical 4 and he said yes, further stating “my heart is still there” and that working with that team “in any form” would be “amazing.”
- Apple is discontinuing its iPod touch… which makes me realize what a travesty it is I didn’t ever replace my SUPER old, barely working ‘Nano’ (I think that’s the version I have). I know I’m odd, but I still like an MP3 player when (or rather IF) I go on my walks as opposed to anything else. PLUS I am NOT someone who is glued to their phone which I’m weirdly proud of.
- In addition to ‘Magnum,’ other shows cancelled include NBC’s The Endgame and Mr. Mayor; CBS’ Good Sam; B Positive; and How We Roll; plus CW’s All American: Homecoming, Charmed, Dynasty, Legacies, Naomi and Roswell. All in all, it was a pretty brutal cancellation day.
Did you see any of these ‘pop culture news edition thirty three’? Do any make you smile, laugh or sad? What do you think about Magnum or Virgin River or new music? Comment all the comments! Let’s chat.
Thank you for visiting; please do come back soon.
Thanks, Rissi! Good to know what’s coming up. I’ll have to check out “The Way Home.” I really wish another series like “North & South” would run. I ate that one up! I also liked “Poldark,” “Chuck,” and “Burn Notice” for a while, but yeah, there’s not many good TV shows these days.
Thank you for visiting, Gwendolyn. I also LOVED Chuck and Burn Notice. Actually I still have to finish the former. And Poldark was good in the beginning and then for some reason I fell away from that. Either way, I MISS really good TV. Maybe eventually that will change. :)
We were shocked at the number of shows that were cancelled. I was also surprised at Magnum P.I. My husband and I usually watch it together on Saturday mornings, so I guess we’ll have to find something else now!
RIGHT!? I am too, Angela. There were a TON and golly, it was brutal. Plus, I don’t think most networks picked up much new. Not sure if that means not much new came up or if network TV is continuing to lose. Either way, CBS executives did say the ‘Magnum’ choice was a tough one. I’m sure sad about it. Definitely a fun show! Hope you find something new. :)
