POP CULTURE NEWS ONE HUNDRED and TWENTY-TWO

ENOUGH ALREADY! MORE BARBIE CONTROVERSY

As if we haven’t had enough already of the Barbie controversy, it’s again making a comeback. This time because neither Margot Robbie nor Greta Gerwig are nominees for an Oscar while co-stars Ryan Gosling and America Ferrara are. Honestly, I don’t know that I think Margot Robbie should be nominated. Is she good as Barbie? Yes. Will this be or is it her crowning role? I think probably not.

Same can be said of Ryan Gosling. Is THIS the role he deserves a nomination for? Probably not. Is he good as Ken? Yes. When you look at the actors and other films nominated for an Oscar, most aren’t like Barbie. This doesn’t mean Barbie isn’t a solid film when it comes to its filmmaking and storytelling because it is, but that doesn’t automatically mean it (or any film) is worthy. There’s been other actors or filmmakers who turn in equally good performances or productions and miss an Oscar nod. Also worth noting is that Gerwig isn’t nominated for best director, but Barbie has lots of nominations including Best Adapted Screenplay which Gerwig co-wrote.

There’s many an outraged voice about this subject that many outlets are calling a “snub.” This includes Ferrera and Gosling, plus countless Hollywood and public figures, including politicians.

HOPE VALLEY RETURNS

If you’re a fan of Hallmark TV shows, on the heels of the season two finale of their current show, The Way Home, you’ll get to return to Hope Valley with season eleven of When Calls the Heart. The show will pick up in the aftermath of the season ten (an ending with much discussion) cliffhanger. Here are some of the things this week reveals about the upcoming season:

“As Hope Valley enters the 1920s in the new season, schoolteacher Elizabeth Thornton (Erin Krakow) embarks on a fresh start – with new romance, new challenges and new style. She and Mountie Nathan Grant (Kevin McGarry) navigate their growing romantic feelings while also leaning on each other for support as they face new parenting obstacles. Newly elected Governor Lucas Bouchard (Chris McNally) must confront his past in order to embrace his strengths and lead Hope Valley into the future. Retired Mountie Bill Avery (Jack Wagner) and newspaper reporter Rosemary Coulter (Pascale Hutton) team up to unravel a mystery…”

The show drops on April 7 and will contain twelve episodes.

LAST THINGS

The third season of Reacher will be based on the seventh Jack Reacher novel Persuader. Alongside titular star Alan Ritchson, Maria Sten will again return making her, so far, the only cast member to seasonally return with Ritchson; I have to say, I’m glad she’s returning. According to one article, this upcoming season, which is filming now, will follow Reacher as he goes “undercover to rescue an informant held by a haunting foe from his past.”

Lindsay Lohan will continue her partnership with Netflix by starring in two Netflix original movies. Her first, Falling for Christmas is a 2022 release, and her second (which we already know is Irish Wish) which will drop sometime early this year. The next is Our Little Secret, which is another Christmas flick and will tell the story of exes who must spend Christmas together when they realize they’re dating siblings. Lohan will co-star with Kristin Chenoweth and Ian Harding.

Back in 2020, it was announced that Sofia Coppola would adapt the Edith Wharton novel Custom of the Country, only to later cancel it. Now Coppola says that Apple just pulled their “funding,” and that the talk was that the execs didn’t “get” the leading character Undine.

In spring 2024, Amazon will stream The Baxters. Roma Downey produces and leads the cast in this 2018 ten episode drama that the Karen Kingsbury novels inspires.

Kate Hudson will star in the top role of a new Mindy Kaling Netflix comedy. The show, according to one article will have Hudson playing “the only sister in a family of competitive brothers [who] has been overlooked and underappreciated her whole life. But when a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla is unexpectedly appointed President of the Los Angeles Waves […]” Do you think you’d watch?
