POP CULTURE NEWS EDITION FORTY-FIVE
DID SHE DO SOMETHING BAD?
Taylor Swift had some bad press this past week after being called out by activists for climate about her overuse of her private jet. Her team responded with a pretty gloss on the story saying it’s not always just Taylor who uses the jet. Then, in a counter punch, a story is published that Swift is writing new music for the first time in two years which could result in a new album. Not sure if this is rumor or true, but either way, super interesting how that story dropped right on top of a “bad” news story for the singer.
HALLMARK TO ‘RIDE’ INTO DRAMA
If I’m not mistaken, we made mention of an upcoming Hallmark series on one of these several weeks back. In casting news, Hallmark has its trio leads in their upcoming 2023 family drama Ride (it’s current title). The series will feature Nancy Travis (from Last Man Standing) as the matriarch alongside Tiera Skovbye. From Riverdale, Skovbye will play a family member by marriage and Beau Mirchoff who you may remember from Hallmark’s Hidden Gems, a son. Another article also lists Tyler Jacob Moore playing a “handsome stranger” as well.
HOW TO (STILL) USE LEGAL JARGON!
Legally Blonde 3 is getting some buzz again. After the original rumored release of May 2022 passed, Reese Witherspoon is talking (some) again about the potential sequel. Most recently she said in a USA Today interview, “I’m still hoping that Legally Blonde 3 is gonna come together in the right way. It’s just like Top Gun. They waited a long time to make another version of that movie, and I loved the nostalgia piece they incorporated in it. So definitely that gave us a lot of inspiration about what we would want to do with Elle Woods and make sure that we had all those same touchstones that mattered to people [back] then.” Later she also said, “I feel like these characters are my friends, so I safeguard them. I would never make the subpar, mediocre version of their story.”
Speaking of how she safeguards the characters, did you like the sequel as well or did it live up to the first for you?
NEW ROMANTIC COMEDY
Kristen Bell will return to the comedy genre with The People We Hate at the Wedding. So far it has no official rating, but I’m a BIT skeptical it will be of the R raunchy kind of comedy vs a “sweeter” type. This seems truer seeing that the co-writers also have a credit (pre production) for the next Deadpool film. Time will tell. The story will follow a dysfunctional family at a family wedding and the “skeletons” that come up during the week. November 18th is it’s drop on Amazon.
On December 9th, Amazon will also release a Christmas romantic comedy called Something at Tiffany’s which will follows Zoey Deutch’s (from Set It Up) character comes into possession of an engagement ring meant for someone else. Nonetheless, this will still lead her to her person! Reese Witherspoon is producing and so far, this one has sa PG rating. Sounds like it could be fun…
WILL SHE REIGN?
According to one source, Amazon has “greenlit” a series order for My Lady Jane, which yes, is based on the wildly popular young adult novel of the same name. The story line, so far, reads “the series will follow an irreverent young Tudor woman who dreads her arranged marriage, only to be surprised when it results in a steamy romance, her being crowned Queen and a heroic mission to save the magical people persecuted by her political rivals.” And thus far cast in the three main roles are Emily Bader, Edward Bluemel and Jordan Peters. What are your thoughts on this “early” look at an upcoming Amazon Studios production?
LAST THINGS:
If you’re a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, you may find it interesting that its mainstay star Ellen Pompeo will “reduce” her role this upcoming 19th year. Many say this is because she’ll star in a Hulu limited series, but also according to articles, her character did make a big life decision at the end of season 18 setting this change up well. Will you miss her?
Jake Gyllenhaal is set to star in a remake of Road House for Amazon Prime.
Netflix will mark the return of Bones star Emily Deschanel to a TV show. She’ll star in an eight-part series called Devil in Ohio about a “psychiatrist [whose] world is turned upside down when she decides to protect Mae, a fragile teenager on the run from a cult.” The plot continues to read that this choice winds up turning her family’s world into chaos.
Season two of the sequel to CSI, which is CSI: Vegas will have two new faces in their cast. As recurring members of the cast, Sara Amini and Joel Johnstone will star as medical examiners.
According to the rumor mill, 20th Century Fox and Selena Gomez are in talks to develop and produce a reboot of the 80s film Working Girl. Presumably Gomez would perhaps also take on a role in front of the camera but who knows!
The Nielsen Streaming Chart reads that Chris Pratt’s Terminal List “locked in” its number two spot. Has anyone seen this? I still need to.
CW’s The Flash will end with its upcoming ninth season. It will begin to air in early 2023 and wrap with a short 13 episode season order.
Amazon will drop a period drama Catherine Called Birdy which is described as a comedy about a young teen girl living in medieval times who rejects the idea of marriage. Billie Piper (Mansfield Park, Doctor Who) and Joe Alwyn are two of the cast members. The film will drop this autumn, October 7 to be exact after a premiere in theaters in September.
Ok! Over to you. Did you see any of these stories? Are you curious about any? Do any make you sad (in a fandom kind of way)? Will you watch any of these new TV shows? What are your thoughts on the potential My Lady Jane? Or Amazon’s movies? Will you miss Meredith? Comment all the comments. Let’s chat. pop culture news edition forty five
Thank you for visiting; please come back soon.
The My Lady Jane series could be really fun, the book was a blast!
It sounds like it could be. Now I just have to stop *talking* about the book and actually read it. ;)
