COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF: ACTORS WHO HAVE PLAYED A U.S. PRESIDENT

It’s nearly President’s Day so to celebrate we’re looking for some of the actors who played a U.S. president. This, as a list seems like a fun idea, but time will tell when I go to actually find actors who fit this topic. Nonetheless, what better day than now to look into the actors who have brought to light a commander in chief character.

Some of these are actors stepping into actual president’s shows. Others playing fictional characters, some of which play them very well. Let’s meet these actors and the characters they played.

ACTORS WHO PLAYED A U.S. PRESIDENT

MICHAEL DOUGLAS in THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT

Despite the many positive reviews and I think being a favorite film, I’ve never seen this political romance that chronicles the reelection campaign of a widowed president and the romance he forms with a lobbyist.

HENRY FONDA in YOUNG MR. LINCOLN

From John Ford, this one follows ten years in the life of Abraham Lincoln. At publication, this is with Roku and Tubi TV

HARRISON FORD in AIR FORCE ONE

Never did see this film but it’s an extremely popular and I think well liked film, perhaps even one of Ford’s best according to many. It’s about a terrorist, looking for the release of a prisoner, who takes the President’s plane hostage.

PAUL GIAMATTI in JOHN ADAMS

I watched this years ago and have re-watched it a time or two since that rewatch. It’s a well made production (though as to details being accurate, this I have zero clue) but way too intense for me to watch often.

MARK HARMON in CHASING LIBERTY

Playing a fictional president or not, Harmon does a fabulous job not only as Mr. President but also as the overprotective father of a first daughter.

DENNIS HAYSBERT in 24

When I asked on a Facebook group for reminders and favorite actors playing president’s, someone reminded me of Dennis Haysbert from 24. He may play a fictional president, but he is one of those who stuck with me in what ended up being a memorable turn as a president.

ALEXANDER KNOX in WILSON

No clue how popular this 40s film was, but it given it has Darryl F. Zanuck’s (People Will Talk, The King and I, All About Eve, and studio home to Shirley Temple) name attached, I’m including it. Plus it has decent ratings.

DANIEL DAY LEWIS in LINCOLN

Zero clue if I watched this one or not. It’s from Stephen Spielberg and obviously is a storm about Lincoln. The plot surrounds the final four months of the life of this president.

MICHAEL KEATON in FIRST DAUGHTER

This film is all sweet and cute which follows Katie Holmes’ first daughter, but it does have some more emotional and deeper elements, primarily in the relationship she has with her father. Find on Hulu or Plex TV (at publication)

DENNIS QUAID in REAGAN

This one isn’t out yet, but it looks like it could be an interesting film chronicling the life of Ronald Reagan. It has a pretty good cast too including Amanda Righetti (one of my favorites from The Mentalist), Trevor Donovan (from Hallmark) and Jon Voight.

JUST for FUN

DABNEY COLEMAN in MY DATE WITH THE PRESIDENT’S DAUGHTER

This is one of those just for fun options since it’s not a serious film in any way and I really don’t think the president has much of a role. Still, the 1998 film is all about nostalgic fun because it’s all about that boy-meets-girl cute factor only this time girl is the U.S. president’s daughter. Also, where can we petition for these older Wonderful World of Disney films to be released!??

JAMIE FOXX in WHITE HOUSE DOWN

This film is all kinds of crazy in terms of accuracy. The end, in particular, seems very unrealistic (bringing the President back to the White House before its cleared and safe in particular stands out), but nonetheless, like Battleship, I find the film supremely entertaining.

BILL PULLMAN from INDEPENDECE DAY

Not one I’ve seen, but more than one person shared this actor and film on the Facebook page. Plus, sometimes you just have to have an alien invasion movie on the list, right?

Have you met any of these characters? Which films or TV shows would you watch? What president characters do you like? Comment all of the comments below! Let’s talk all the things.
