FAVORITE UNDERRATED AND SECONDARY TV HEROINES WHO STILL SHINE

by

When it comes to fiction, I have a more difficult time remembering all of the amazing secondary or sometimes even primary fictional characters the pages of a good book contains. This I kind of attribute to perhaps the fact that visual storytelling lingers longer in my mind as well as the face that I re-watch TV shows where I rarely re-read a novel. Instead of a focus on fiction, today we’re staying with fictional characters, yes, but looking at favorite underrated TV heroines. Because we love spotlighting favorite characters and so it all fits nicely with the theme.

Before we can get to this though we must first see who we can find that does suit the topic. Whether or not there’s enough I can remember is where the challenge is. I’m sure there are plenty out there, but some of the time the mind just isn’t operating at its best. Add in the fact that the most writing tends to happen late at night (perhaps not the greatest idea?) and you have reason why the mind may not engage. Still we’re going to see who we can find and hope there’s some memorable TV – and let’s be real, likely film, characters.

FAVORITE UNDERRATED TV HEROINES (and FILM, ALSO)

EVE and MANDY BAXTER from LAST MAN STANDING

These two maybe aren’t technically “underrated,” but I’m including them nonetheless. I love them both for different reasons.

MRS. AUDREY HALL from ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL

Here’s the thing, I don’t think Mrs. H. (as the gang affectionately calls her) is underrated, but I also don’t think she’s a heroine who gets the same kind of attention or love as many on other shows.

MOLLY HOOPER from SHERLOCK

Cannot remember the “when” of meeting this character, but do know I loved her when I watched these. From her crush on Sherlock (even dating someone mirroring him!) to her growth and getting to say her peace, she’s memorable and lovely.

MADISON from MY LIFE IS MURDER

Who wouldn’t love Madison? She’s a big personality who is so very good for Alexa.

MEG MARCH from LITTLE WOMEN

No secret is made of the fact that I really don’t love the recent Little Women film. (I respect that its storytelling is in appreciation of Louisa May Alcott, but the style, that I cannot support.) However, if there’s one thing I walk away with from this film, it’s how much more Emma Watson gives us of Meg. This is the first time I came away admiring Meg. Don’t mistake me, I’ve never not liked her, I just don’t think on her much because I think she’s the one sister who is “lost” in the love people have for these character. That one scene where she stands up, in a gentle and loving way, for her choices when Jo attempts to change her mind… it’s wonderful.

PEARL NOLAN from WHITSTABLE PEARL

Really like this character. As this is a British show, it’s “darker” right down to the scenery and such, but nonetheless, I like her. I think she’s smart, even if she cannot always recognize this, and I like her drive to help people.

PARKER from LEVERAGE

Ah, Parker! This one may not be a fair add, because she may have a big following. I’m not sure. Either way, I really like Parker and admire how much she’s grown. Plus, the way the girl loves vents, jumping off building and stealing things, well, those are just loveable quirks.

MRS. ANN WESTON from EMMA

A character who is from a book, I quite like Miss Taylor who becomes Mrs. Weston from Austen’s Emma. The character is wise and very needed for Emma Woodhouse.

MISS DOROTHY WILLIAMS from MISS FISHER’S MURDER MYSTERIES

Dorothy or ‘Dot’ for short, is the total opposite of her titular employee. Nonetheless the best friends suit one another and Dot, even with all of her admirable convictions, still learns a thing or two from Miss Fisher. However I like that Dot still maintains her principles even if she is seen as a bit too buttoned up. That’s something to be admired.

Have you met any of these characters? Would you? Do any sound like potential new favorites? Which ones sound like a possible new best friend? What characters did you feature on your lists? Drop any and all comments below. Let’s talk.

    1. I loved Meg in the recent adaptation; her character really stands out. I always liked her before, but in this one, I feel like she just really shows who she is. :)

    1. I love meeting some great new heroines so these types of lists are fun. I was going to add some heroes too, but didn’t. Next time. :) Thanks for the kinds words. Needs some work/fixes still, but it’s a start plus I kept delaying things after starting this last fall, so here we are. ;)

  1. I love Dot so much, her growth throughout Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries is really lovely to see and they contrast each other well. I also love Mrs H from All Creatures Great and Small, she’s brilliant. And I enjoyed Molly from Sherlock and thought she deserved better than him. I definitely think Jo and Amy stood out more in the Little Women film but I did love the scene of Meg’s that you mentioned.

    1. Oh for sure! The other sisters do stand out way more in the recent Little Women film. This was just the first adaptation where I really feel like we get much or to know about Meg more. It was lovely. :) So many amazing female characters and still so many not included on this list, too. :)
