SOME of the BOOKISH CHARACTERS WE LOVE

As readers, no doubt we love varied characters that don’t ever pick up a book. However when we meet characters who love books, it makes it more interesting and also quite fun as we get to know them. Because of this, it’s always a good deal of fun to spotlight the characters who appreciate all that a good book can do. Let’s mee some bookish characters we love!

Though I’ve written lists like this before and likely there will be more than one example of a repeat, we’re still going to list some of the characters with imaginations and love of books. Because this type of feature will never be too much of a repeat.

CHARACTERS WHO LOVE BOOKS aka BOOKISH CHARACTERS WE LOVE

SARA CREWE from A LITTLE PRINCESS

Sara isn’t a character I often associate with a bookish type. But she does have her books and her vivid imagination is what helps save her. Goodreads

HAZEL GRACE from THE FAULT IN OUR STARS

I don’t think I adore this novel or the film (it’s been too long since I read or watched), but I did appreciate the story more than I thought so this earns her a place. Goodreads

KATHLEEN KELLY from YOU’VE GOT MAIL

I mean, Kathleen is the ultimate book character. She not only has distinct respect for fiction, but owns a bookstore as well.

CATHERINE MORLAND from NORTHANGER ABBEY

Catherine’s imagination is a little bit overzealous, but her love of books is also important to her. Goodreads

RAPUNZEL from TANGLED

Partly because it’s all she has, but Rapunzel’s love of a good book is to be admired.

ANNE SHIRLEY from ANNE OF GREEN GABLES

Anne is an obvious choice and I am sure she appears in any and all lists like this. She’s a classic. Goodreads

KAT STRATFORD from 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU

Ah, Kat. She’s snarky and smart, and yet… we like her.

WILL THACKER from NOTTING HILL

Owning a bookstore and being a kind of likable shy hero, Will fits nicely on this list.

MATILDA WORMWOOD from MATILDA

I don’t really like everything about this story or character, but I’ve also only met her in the recent Netflix musical which I’m sure it’s the most faithful to the novels. What I do appreciate about Matilda is her ability to have such imagination. Goodreads

Have you met any of these characters – either on the page or screen? Which of these bookish characters we love are your favorites? What characters are on your favorite fictional reader’s list? Let’s meet and talk in the comments!

  1. Matilda has always been one of my favourite book characters! The musical doesn’t come to Netflix in the UK till the summer (it was in cinemas for longer here) so I’ll have to wait till then to see it.

    1. Hope you enjoy the Netflix version, Jo! I have nothing to base it on given I haven’t read the books but I’m glad to know she’s a good character as a book character, too. :)
