‘SEE HOW THEY RUN’: A STORY INSIDE A STORY (KIND OF)

There are those movies that we want to see, forget about and then finally do see. See How They Run is one of these.

See How They Run (2022) Film Review

Looking to make success of their The Mousetrap play, penned by Agatha Christie, a theater group consisting of a director (Aiden Brody), producer, script writer and theater owner (Ruth Wilson) have a problem. Or two. They’re looking to take their staged play to the silver screen to capitalize on the success of the 100-night play. Trouble is, the director and writer have very different viewpoints on how to produce the film. The director wants big flashy and unusual. The writer wants traditional and familiar. But as this is a murder mystery, life imitates art when, the least likable character winds up dying, posing on the stage for display.

This brings in Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan), a young and eager woman wanting to take her sergeants exam. To oversee the investigation is Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell), a man who has more than his share of tough breaks.

This is one of those film’s that tries to be a classic kind of whodunit mystery. Taking many cues from Agatha Christie, the film is mostly a fun time. A flaw it has is that it does jump around some in its pursuit of crafting its version of Agatha Christie storytelling. Beyond this, the style it does adopt is a kind of quirky one that tries to imitate the old fashion style of mystery and while this can make things run a little slow, See How They Run is also a supremely entertaining flick.

The cast is pretty solid and after roles in films like Brooklyn, I enjoy seeing Saoirse Ronan again. She plays the eager investigator well and while I wish we could get to know her and Stoppard better, the script does work into personal elements nicely. Costuming is cool and the entire film’s effect plays well for what it wants to accomplish. Even with the flaws, I don’t have a lot bad to say here. This flick is a good mystery that entertains.

CONTENT: There’s obviously murder and the death of a character. We see him lying on a sofa slumped over with blood. (Non-graphic.) There’s a tense sequence that closes out the film including someone threatening a group of people and someone being shot. Another character is an alcoholic who is unable to keep a clear head. The film is PG-13.
