If I had to guess, I’d assume this is one of the rare ‘Movies & Mysteries’ titles on the drama end that did quite well. This is because Lacey Chabert is one of Hallmark’s most loved stars. The film doesn’t work for me because of two reasons. The primary of which is, I don’t think the acting is that good. I’m not sure if it was something to do with the actual shoot or if the actors didn’t work well together or what, but I think this was a step down from most Hallmark movie acting. Secondly, the emotion of the film didn’t feel genuine. Another thing I attribute to, in part, the acting.
Based on the novel by Katie Lee, Groundswell is a script that, from a cursory reading of the book’s synopsis, seems to be very different. The book is about film stars and California. Whereas this uses restaurateurs as the backdrop. The cook off seems boring but the scenery and Hawaiian setting is gorgeous. The surfing, while using stunt doubles, is pretty and of course, ties into emotional aspects of the film. While not something I enjoyed in a memorable way or would consider a favorite from the network, I am 99% sure, fans of Lacey will enjoy this.
