SOME OF THE BEST MOMENTS BETWEEN ‘ELEMENTARY’S’ SHERLOCK AND WATSON

It’s been months since we put together one of our OTP favorite category publications. They’re always fun, but also more work, which means they aren’t something we regularly take on. Still, on this autumn day, we’re going to publish one even if it isn’t the usual kind of “OTP” couple. No, in fact, it’s quite an unusual pairing in that we’re spotlighting Elementary’s Sherlock and Joan Watson. If this seems odd to you (that’s fair), we’re going to share our thoughts on these two and hopefully convince you otherwise.

It’s quite true and fair to say that Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Joan Watson aren’t a couple. At least not in an epic will-they-or-won’t they kind of way we’re used to from TV shows. No, these two are steady and for the most part, reliable in that they have this unbreakable friendship that is nearly impossible not to like. It also anchors this show and despite reading that it had no real excitement appeal from week to week (like a romantic pairing), I disagree. It’s these two and the cases, that do entice us to return. It’s the lack of annoying will-they-or-won’t-they that makes it good.

The plot of this since completed CBS drama follows a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, living in New York, and a recovering addict. Hired as his sober companion is Joan Watson, a former surgeon struggling with some demons of her own.

The show continues from there in a kind of week-by-week case that allows for a beautiful relationship to deepen between these two unlikely companions. It’s not that of a rosy “romance” or even the social media “one true pairing” trend most shows portray, but they come to rely on one another in special ways and both come to this with mutual respect. Today’s goal is to spotlight a few of the scenes or examples of this. Let’s revisit Sherlock and Joan’s memorable friendship snippets.

In the end, the start of their partnership begins when Joan, with a perfect counteroffer, agrees to be Sherlock’s partner and to learn from him as she joins him as a consultant for the police.

THE BOX OF CASES

After Sherlock solves a case Joan was planning to solve and manage on her own, she scolds him for not trusting and leaving her to figure out some things by herself. UNWELL

SEASON SIX, EPISODE 1

Going down a spiral where he’s unreachable, Sherlock has to face a fear or two, which he tries to deal with the quite on his own. He does this by ignoring Joan’s questions and making a mess that he doesn’t remember making. When finally he realizes he needs to and owes her, he confides in his best friend, telling her he’s not well. He has a condition that will make his work challenging, and perhaps even prevent him from doing it. When she hears, she understands and despite his disdain of the gesture, she gives him a hug… and for these two, the moment is charming.

TWO PEOPLE & LOVE

SEASON SIX, EPISODE 20 elementary’s sherlock and watson

Convinced he’s about to lose his partner to a prison cell when she’s wrongfully accused of a brutal murder, Sherlock takes matters into his own hands and does what he thinks is best. He confesses to the murder, and brokers a deal that ensures his freedom… but means he’ll have to return to London. Telling Joan goodbye, as he walks away, and in response to her reminder that “we’re partners,” Sherlock tells her, “No, we’re much better than that. We’re two people that love each other. We always have been.”

STAYING

SEASON EIGHT, EPISODE 13

Learning a truth about Joan, just as they prepare to part again – he back to London and his work, Joan remaining in New York to continue her happy life – Sherlock changes course. Joan was there in his darkest times, and embracing her, he tells Joan, “I’m staying. Of course, I’m staying.” This setting up the future of their relationship and solidifying all we already know; Sherlock’s friendship with Joan is the true source of him (and her) being at his best. elementary’s sherlock and watson

…and while these two have many more charming moments (like Holmes naming a bee after Joan) and friendship between them, these are some of the highlights.

What are your thoughts on these two? Do you think these two are good together? Would they ever evolve into a unique couple that isn’t normal?
