POP CULTURE NEWS ONE HUNDRED and EIGHT
FAIRYTALES of 2024
2024 is going to be a big year for fairy tales. Two of which will tell the same story. We all know Disney is releasing their live-action version of Snow White in 2024 featuring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. It’s a film with its share of controversy but will definitely drum up excitement nonetheless. Part of the controversy is that the film won’t be about a prince saving a girl, but rather an independent girl. This can be done well, but creating a heroine with strength doesn’t have to come at the cost of lessoning the role of the partner. Instead, you can create this through partnership where both people use their strengths. Whether or not the script will do this, well, time will tell.
This week, Daily Wire also announced Bentkey, a new arm of their entertainment branch and streaming platform Daily Wire+ that will focus on children’s programming. Their first big project will be a live action film of Snow White. Daily Wire’s co-CEO Jeremy Boreing says it will be about “a princess and a prince, about beauty and vanity, about love and its power to raise us from death to life.”
The film will star their breakout pop culture YouTube commentator, Brett Cooper. Formerly an actress prior to her Daily Wire news gig, Cooper will play the titular character in Snow White and the Evil Queen. She says about the role, “I was raised on the original Grimms’ Fairy Tales, so I’m thrilled that we’re bringing this iconic story to life for the next generation. Snow White is such a beautiful character, and I’m honored to be playing her. Like all the best fairy tales, this is a story with timeless values, like love, friendship, and kindness, and I can’t wait to share them.”
Daily Wire’s production is, according to the teasers and company, based more on the Grimm fairy tale than Disney’s animated version. Which one are you more excited to see? You can see a teaser for the eventual film here on Twitter. Cooper is also currently filming The Pendragon Cycle.
LAST things
If you’re a fan of the light-hearted Netflix show Sweet Magnolias, you might like to know, it will be back for a fourth season. The fourth season will again consist of 10 episodes.
Freevee released details and a trailer this week about their upcoming Christmas flick EXmas. Featuring Leighton Meester and Robbie Amell, its title clues us in. It will follow exes who meet up again over the Christmas season. The PG-13 film will drop November 17 (on Freevee) and you can view the teaser trailer on YouTube.
Gwyneth Paltrow made a pop culture headline or two saying that she’ll retire and when she does, “no one” will ever see her again. Honestly, I don’t know how genuine celebrities are when they make claims like this, but I know I don’t envy a camera stuck in my face 24/7 in the least.
Sony released its teaser for Anyone But You, the much buzzed about romantic film featuring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. The film will arrive in theaters December 22.
