THE WEEKLY NEWS 199: NEW ROMANCE AND A COZY SHOW GAINS NETFLIX POPULARITY
Hey there! Welcome back to RissiWrites[dot]com on this fine Friday. the weekly news 199
On Fridays we take a closer look at the pop culture-like weekly stories making the rounds in the headlines. Let’s see what made headlines this week.
THE WEEKLY NEWS 199
AMAZON MGM STUDIOS aka PRIME VIDEO bulletin
Amazon MGM Studios (Prime Video) has a new romantic drama coming later this year called The Map That Leads to You. Its press logline says it’s about “Heather (Cline), a young woman setting off on an adventure across Europe with her best friends before settling into her perfectly planned life. When she crosses paths with Jack (Apa), a magnetic and mysterious stranger, their instant spark ignites an emotional journey neither of them expected.” The film will have KJ Apa, Madelyn Cline in the lead roles. The story is an adaptation of the novel by JP Monninger and will be directed by Lasse Hallström. The streamer also has a trailer (below) for this upcoming August 20th release.
Also on their adaptation roster is Ali Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis. According to reports, Tom Bateman and Lili Reinhart will lead the adaptation. The novel reads as being a fake relationship trope and its Goodreads page teases the story as follows: “When a fake relationship between scientists meets the irresistible force of attraction, it throws one woman’s carefully calculated theories on love into chaos.” The film is reportedly being directed by Claire Scanlon, who was behind Set It Up.
Also in the works from Amazon is an adaptation of Every Summer After which is inspired by the novel by Carley Fortune. That novel’s book page reads as following Persephone Fraser, a woman who “made the biggest mistake of her life a decade ago,” which dictates her life now as she works to purposefully keep “everyone a safe distance from her heart.” This includes Sam Florek, the one man who she “thought she’d have to live without.”
NETFLIX REVIEW | ‘UNTAMED’ IS A GRITTY LIMITED NETFLIX DRAMA
Dropping this past week is a trailer (below) for the upcoming show Butterfly featuring Daniel Dae Kim. According to the logline from Prime Video, the show is “a character-driven spy thriller that explores complex family dynamics within the treacherous world of global espionage. It’s centered on David Jung (Kim), an enigmatic, highly unpredictable former US intelligence operative living in South Korea, whose life is blown to pieces when the consequences of an impossible decision from his past come back to haunt him, and he finds himself pursued by Rebecca (Hardesty), a deadly, sociopathic young agent assigned to kill him, and Caddis, the sinister spy organization she works for.”
LAST THINGS
Thanks to a press release from The CW, we know that they will pick up Sullivan’s Crossing for its fourth season. The show, which makes its network U.S. debut on the CW, now also has a home on Netflix where the Canadian show has been hitting some good numbers. The third season finale just aired this past week (and from what I understand there is a bit of drama!) and the presser says that this upcoming season will be a “10-Episode Fourth Season [and] Will Return in 2026.” The show features Scott Patterson, Chad Michael Murray and Morgan Kohan in leading roles and follows Kohan’s return to her hometown.
The Emmy nominations made their mark during the last week. I don’t really care about them so I didn’t pay close attention, but headlines suggest HBO Max shows did well; NBC Universal press had a headline that reads, in part, “NBCUniversal Receives 72 Emmy Award Nominations”; and Kathy Bates also made headlines for her best actress nomination for a network show Matlock.
In other NBCUniversal aka Peacock (their streamer), prices are, according to reporting, ready to jump. The price increase reporting is saying an extra $3.00 per month, and a possible plan additional ad tier (they do already have one) that will be very limiting in what you can stream. Will you be keeping this streamer?
According to a press release and more than one outlet, Hallmark Channel has acquired the rights to air Gilmore Girls. Beginning in late August, the network will air the “pop culture sensation” show “in its entirety” and in sequential order from “2 to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 8 to 10 a.m. on weekends.”

About this acquisition, a statement reads “The success of the Gilmore Girls universe is a testament to the power of storytelling that is centered around love, family, and close-knit community,” said Hallmark Media’s VP of Programming & Acquisitions, Ayn Prince. “Hallmark shares the same passion for feel good, whimsical content and characters, making this show and its ever-growing fandom the perfect addition to our Hallmark Channel viewing experience.”
Will you be visiting Stars Hollow? The show is also available to stream currently on Netflix.
