One story from early in the week makes me sad, not because it’s something we cannot “cope” with but rather because it signals the end of another story that actually had good storytelling, and in today’s TV landscape, that’s a rarity. But let’s see what else we can find.
POP CULTURE NEWS ONE HUNDRED and THIRTEEN
Last week Hallmark cancelled their drama Ride. This week they announced their other drama, The Way Home, will return in the new year. January 21 to be exact will mark the return of the show’s second season. Popular among many Hallmark Twitter fans, the show left off on a cliffhanger in part when two people seem poised to get together… and then don’t based on a choice. The drama follows a family of time travelers untangling the painful events of their pasts.
Another favorite (of mine) USA Network, aka where Suits originates from, series star Matt Bomer said last Friday there’s “legitimate” talks for a White Collar revival. Bomer went on to further say that “a lot of things need to fall into place, but there is a plan in effect, at least, so we’ll see what happens.” The show followed Bomer’s con man, Neal Caffrey who worked with Tim DeKay’s FBI agent to solve art theft cases.
Rumors are swirling that Universal could produce a sixth installment in the Jason Bourne world. Edward Berger (acclaimed for All Quiet on the Western Front) is in rumored talks to direct. At the time, there’s no other development such as a script or actor.
The news broke this week that Blue Bloods, a fourteen year staple on CBS, will end with its upcoming fourteenth season. Because of the strikes, the show will break up and broadcast in two parts; the first ten episodes arrive this winter (February) and air its swan song Fall 2024. This makes me really sad. Not because I don’t think the show deserves a good ending (which it should get), but because it signals the end of another story that has good storytelling, a capacity most writers today don’t understand. The drama follows an NYC cop family with Tom Selleck playing the patriarch. I suspect it will end with said patriarch giving up his top cop position, and other family members making changes, too. What do you hope to see in the final season?
