THE TYPE OF BOOKS I COULD HAVE READ IN 2023. BUT DIDN’T.

No matter how many books a reader reads in a year (always presumably more than I), there’s probably always that one or two we wish we had read. For me, there’s likely several I could share that I should have read. This is the day to spotlight the books I could have read in 2023. The reason I didn’t is no more complicated than I simply didn’t sit down to read them.

THE TYPE OF BOOKS I COULD HAVE READ IN 2023. BUT DIDN’T. Talking the types of books I could have read in 2023… but didn't. #TopTen #BookList #TopTenTuesday #List #Reading #Reader Share on X

We’re going to look at this a little differently though. Instead of books, because let’s be honest, we repeat titles, we have a list of the types of books I could have read in 2023. Zero doubt there’s likely a list of actual titles I could spotlight on a day like this but perhaps this way, our list will be slightly less boring. Let’s see what we come up with as we piece together this list.

TYPES OF BOOKS I COULD HAVE READ IN 2023

BACKLIST TITLES

I have so many books that had sat idle on my shelf for too long. I need to either be more brutal in what I get rid of or read the dang books.

CHRISTMAS READS

Each year, during this past month, I think I’m going to read 2 or 3 perfectly cozy Christmas reads, and each year ends without my having done so. Does anyone else struggle with this?

FAVORITE AUTHORS

Reading a favorite author is always a must, and I feel like there’s authors from my past reading life in particular that I’d like to read more from. These would include Denise Hunter, Lynette Eason and Katherine Reay.

FAVORITE GENRES

Reading a favorite genre is definitely a “comfort” thing and doesn’t always challenge a reader. But that’s always the best thing about a favorite genre read. It is a comfort read, and isn’t that what “comfort” is all about? Feeling happy and good and cozy?

NEW AUTHORS

If there is one thing I did in 2023, even with my what, 12 reads in the year (I may have missed one or two), I did read a couple I’d been meaning to read forever. They were Katherine Center and Taylor Jenkins Reid. Now I just need to read more I have wanted to read for a while, and another by Center. I didn’t love Reid’s in the way of it being a re-read, but I did enjoy One True Loves very much and would read something else by her, too.

What books did you intend to read in 2023 and didn’t? Are any of these types of book or reading something you want to accomplish? How do you decide what to read? Comment all of your thoughts below. Let’s meet in the comments.

Ps: thanks so much to everyone who left comments last week! I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on social media and goals for the year; and I appreciate you all taking the time to share.

    1. Thanks, Laurie! And my apologies if the post is showing any error for you! I’ve checked different browsers and don’t see one, so if there is, I’m not sure how to correct it?

  1. I love Taylor Jenkins Reid but I haven’t read Katherine Center. I’ve been meaning to read some of her books so I guess I have to add that to my TBR this year! I hope you have a good reading year!

  2. Great take on this post, can so identify with backlist books already sitting on my shelf. Another type for me would be all the books other readers talked about that I wanted to read then and there! But we are mere humans!

    1. Thanks! Going to try reading more next week since I’m taking off from writing (computer screens) and phone! :) Hopefully I’ll find some great new stories to enjoy.

  3. I am becoming more of a mood reader, even though I have always been, if that makes sense. I am trying to not pick up the same genre over and over again too, branching out a bit. However, somehow or another, I have had TWO books that ended up being dual-time (neither labeled as such) and BOTH had death of spouse, child, and a stillborn birth. One was Amish fiction and one was contemporary. I am like WHAT IN THE WORLD! Where are the triggers/warnings for these!! Anyway, we can try all we want, LOL!

    1. I don’t know if I would call myself a mood reader in a strict sense, but I have been more about reading the genres/authors I enjoy. I love the idea of reading more unusual books, but also still within my favorite genre because I want the highest chance of enjoying my reads. I’ve just never gotten into fantasy or sci-fi so reading in that is likely not something I’ll steer towards. ;) I’m sorry you read a couple that were sad. That’s definitely not my favorite type of read, BUT I deal with it if its a: well written and b: if there is at a minimum hope at the end and at best, happiness. :)

        1. I’m so glad you’re finding good even in the sad book. I’ve read some like that too in the past though nowadays if a story is going to be sad, I do like there to be something happy about it too. Balance is where it’s all at. ;)

  4. I have so many books that I want to read. I also think I’m going to make time to read a cozy Christmas story, but I rarely manage to. I did re-read A Christmas Carol this year though, so I’m going to count that as a win. Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

    1. YAY for a Christmas Carol re-read. That is a win in the Christmas reading challenges. I haven’t ever read that one, but I cannot imagine a more appropriate Christmas read. :) Thanks so much for visiting!

  5. Blacklist titles are my struggle area. I’m really good about reading book 1 in a series or the latest release, but I struggle to go back and finish series or blacklist books. I’m sort of ADD that way, I guess. 🤦‍♀️

    1. I have done that too (read book one and neglected the rest), but I also just have books on my shelf that I never read for some unknown reason. I have all of those Lady Jane books by the three authors and haven’t read a one despite thinking they sound fun! ;) Maybe this will be our year to change our lack of backlist title reading!

    1. YES! The books on my shelf need to start to be a priority. In many ways it is since I rarely accept/request a review copy right now. So in that way I’m doing better. Now I just have to actually READ the books! ;)

  6. I love this idea! Your post still kind of addresses the prompt while making it more unique to you, which is cool. I can definitely agree that I could have read more backlist books, and an area that I desperately need to do more reading from is my own book shelves, which are starting to overflow with unread books! But hopefully 2024 is going to be full of great reads and even more new blogger friends!

    1. I need to read more books from my shelves for sure, Leah… and yet I keep buying (aka adding more) all of the books. Hopefully I make SOME small progress on this in 2024, but time will tell. Still hoping. ;) So glad you stopped by and I agree, more blogger friends is always cool. :)
