‘SHIFTING GEARS’: EXES REUNITE SPARKING ROMANCE AGAIN

In an exes reunite scenario, Shifting Gears puts them in competition as Hallmark favorite Tyler Hynes leads the cast.

Shifting Gears (2024) Hallmark TV Film Review

Reluctant though she is to do so, Jess Barro (Katherine Barrell) makes plans to compete in a car restoration competition. Talented in her work as a mechanic, she isn’t interested in competition. She like fixing cars and working hard every day. Things get more interesting when she learns that one of her fellow competitors is Luke (Hynes), the ex she shares a difficult past with.

As the competition progresses and the two work on their respective projects, their past also comes up, which forces them both to reexamine their part relationship.

With Tyler Hynes in the leading man role, Shifting Gears is something likely to have pulled in some viewers. New to the leading lady role, Katherine does a great job with the character. Longtime fans of the network will also like seeing Kristin Booth in a secondary role who is from Signed, Sealed, Delivered.

The wardrobe is also fun and works well for the characters, mainly the small details like Jess’ bandana accessory. The opening credits are fun too, introducing the lead heroine well. The whole repeat secret misunderstanding bit isn’t well done, and I don’t think the script does the character’s a service by rehashing this in the same way.

Perhaps not a favorite Hallmark original (because of some heavy handed themes), Shifting Gears is still a good time. The setting, which surrounds restoring cars, isn’t something we see often, which earns this one points and keeps it more unique. I also like the supporting characters and how everyone interacts. The film is heavy on the whole do-it-all-solo bit, but for the most part, it primarily entertains.

Content: nothing much to note outside of the normal TV-G rating content such as a kiss or two, or an emotional conversation.
