‘MYSTERY ISLAND’: A MYSTERY SURE TO ENTERTAIN CLUE FANS

Compared to most of their cozy mysteries, Mystery Island is a unique setting that ensures it some individuality.

Mystery Island (2023) Hallmark TV Review

Working with the police in London as a consultant, psychiatrist Emilia Priestly (Elizabeth Henstridge) needs a break. She’s ready to have a quieter life, especially after one too many threats by the criminals she talks with. Her friend, Jane (Kezia Burrows) convinces her to return with her to Mystery Island. An all inclusive and immersive murder mystery experience. Looking to enjoy some fun and downtime, the last thing Emelia expects is to find herself right in the middle of an actual murder…

Whereas most of the mystery movies on this Hallmark network are about sleuths in an almost Murder, She Wrote kind of set up, Mystery Island is slightly different. Yes, it still has a cozier vibe and isn’t a “scary” mystery film, but it also plays up the Clue board game angle with a Sherlock Holmes twist through the heroine’s work.

The film is a fast-moving plot with a small lineup of suspects making us wonder, whodunit? Questioning the motives of some and enjoying the “chase” of trying to find the murderer. The film is a game of hidden passages and curious evidence, playing up to the film’s title and making us ask what is Mystery Island?

The cast is good too, and it’s great fun to see Elizabeth Henstridge in something again. The rest of the cast is new to me, or if I’ve seen them in other titles, it was guest spots or other minor roles. If you’d recognize them, you’ll also see Charlie Weber, Robert Getman and Francisco Labbe.

Those of us who like the game of Clue or just a good Marple mystery will enjoy Mystery Island. I don’t know that it’s something Hallmark will produce more of, but it’s a fresh concept and story that deserves more time and would be a fun place to spend more time in. The script is complete with the big reveal as they all gather to lay out the mystery and all the reasons for the clues. If you too enjoy a curious mystery, this is a good choice to sit down and discover.

Content: With a TV-PG rating, this one is more “adult” because of the themes of murder and talk about affairs; and we see two bodies, both with minimal blood.
