‘THE WEEKEND AWAY’: FUN VACATION PLANS GO VERY WRONG
A thriller with former TV star Leighton Meester, Netflix debuts this film about a girl’s weekend gone terribly wrong.

Despite her responsibilities and a small daughter at home, Beth (Meester) takes a weekend getaway to Croatia with her friend Kate (Christina Wolfe). Wild and quite the opposite of the more stable Beth, Kate determines to make Beth have the best kind of weekend. She wants her to get drunk, forget about troubles back home and let loose. But that’s Kate, not Beth.
When their weekend away goes horribly wrong and a terrible crime looks to have been committed, everything turns upside down.

Leighton Meester stars in The Weekend Away from #Netflix. #Mystery #Drama Share on XThis is one of those movies that has strong thriller ties just because of its twisting turns. The quality is pretty standard of a Netflix film or perhaps more accurately, a film they likely acquired, and it may remind you of a Lifetime mystery. The cast isn’t fantastic, however it’s fun seeing Leighton in something again. Her Beth is compelling and easy to wish happy things for. I appreciate that she has a kind of moral line she wants to live by, and wish Kate respected her more because of that.
The film actually does a pretty good job building the suspense and making us curious about these characters and pondering which of them deserve trust. There’s a curveball or two, and while we may not love every angle, I think for the most part, this is something you can sit down and enjoy if you like a mystery. If you saw things like Dangerous Lies or Secret Obsession, then expect something similar in The Weekend Away.

CONTENT: There is a lot of moments that are thriller-like. Mostly this is just building up to tension. There’s implications about rape and sexual assault conversation about it. Someone has sex with more than one guy in the same night.
