‘A GOOD GIRL’S GUIDE TO MURDER’ NETFLIX REVIEW IS ONE SMART BRITISH MYSTERY

Based on the novel, of the same name, written by Holly Jackson, this A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder Netflix adaptation piqued curiosity. The plot is simple, but the novel was surprisingly good, so we had to try this.

There is no such thing as a good person. Just a messy mixture of both.

– A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

Holly Jackson made her debut as an author with this novel. From what I understand, there are different editions of the novel, but the one I read is a somewhat different story than how the script veers. Regardless, the main “bones” of the story is the same. Pip is really a solid character. She’s a teenager (there’s some moodiness) and yet I still like her. I think more often than not we intend to enjoy stories of characters we can relate to, but this heroine is pretty cool. We also love that we see Pip, quite casually, reading classic literature in a convenience store. This one dives more into Pip’s inner thoughts and I think, shows us more of her. a good girl’s guide to murder netflix

While I love that Pip has her group of friends, same as the book, the way they try to convince her to do things she believes is wrong kind of annoys me. It’s not a thread that is heavy through the entire series, but I think true friendships don’t pressure if there’s something a friend chooses not to be involved with. The cast is good and it’s lovely to see Anna Maxwell Martin in something after her iconic role of Ester in Bleak House.

Beyond the petty complaints, the series is good. It’s mysterious and I think, appropriate to its generational impact, there’s an edge here. Characters keep us guessing through the reveals our intrepid heroine discovers which makes us question them all. Though the series takes its liberties, I think BBC does a really good job with it. The “tone” and feel is still there. All in all, it’s a good production that would be something I’d rewatch.

Content: there are several references to sex and we learn of a sexual assault. There is also conversation about a minor having sex with an adult. There’s a reference to a same sex hook up a time or two. There are multiple uses of the f-word (episode two for example has 5-7). There are tense moments and drugs play a role; lots of underage character drink. A party features what Pip refers to as a “sex game” and someone tries to make out with a girl who doesn’t want to. There’s conversation about an affair and whether it’s true. The series rates TV-MA.

    1. Ooo! I hope you enjoy it, Lindsey. I was pretty impressed… though I did watch it faster than I ordinarily would because I wanted to finish it before the review post. ;)
