REVIEW: Inspiring a Netflix series adaptation, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is a novel by a British author who made her debut with this. All of these things and more applies to this mystery novel. It also holds the title of being a novel that has sat on my shelf for a while.

The novel is written uniquely as it fluctuates between normal “chapters” and then a typed conversation of Pip’s interviews and her casebook entries. In this way, I think it’s an interesting way to tell a mystery. The book is a little off-putting at the start just as we learn the bearings and adapt to the stylings.
Regardless I think it’s still a good read. Pip is a curious and fun investigator though we don’t really learn much about her outside of surface matters. This is because the story is all about the mystery and the deaths of Andie and Sal. Most of the conversations revolve around this and the story feels kind of like a true crime podcast. I do think this is intentional and something the author wants us to think about.
If you like books by Maureen Johnson or probably any other young adult genre peer author, then A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is probably something you should add to your shelf. It has a whole aesthetic (right from its fabulously detailed cover art) that pulls you in and makes us curious to learn the truth.

Content: there’s some uses of the F-word. Comments reveal teenagers “hook up” and there’s some innuendo though there’s nothing graphic. We learn secondary characters were drugged (other comments reveal teen drug use) and then raped (no details). There are comments about “coming out” and a character who likes the same sex though it’s not primary.
