FACES OF AN ADAPTATION: THE ‘CINDERELLA’ ONE

In one of our many series that we post up around here, we have yet again neglected another one. This time it’s our “adaptation series” where we look at many variations of a story. Today’s is looking at Cinderella movie adaptations. I don’t know about you, but I do adore a good fairytale retelling now and then. So, this is why it’s good fun to spotlight something like Cinderella, which is a timeless story.

There is actually more adaptations of this story than you may assume. (Even I’m surprised!) Of course these aren’t all strict “adaptations” but we’re just here to have fun, so we bend rules. We have the classic kind of stories that Disney made famous, but there’s also versions that are modern and even a miniseries set in the 1950s in the world of fashion. While some don’t always work for me, others, even in their differences, are admirable. Regretfully, I am sure we’re neglect some titles deserving of greater shoutout, but we’ll do our best to spotlight the good ones.

CINDERELLA MOVIE ADAPTATIONS

Sorted by release date, then a to z

CINDERELLA

From Disney, this is probably the first version of the story I ever saw. Though it would have been back in the days when I cannot remember the first time I saw a film. The animation is old school, but I think the story and charm of the characters is still sweet. It’s also, from what I understand and what would apply to many of Disney’s flicks, a lighter version than the original fairytale story tells. Stream, at publication, on Disney+

THE GLASS SLIPPER

A musical version of the classic fable with Leslie Caron in what’s described as a “musical trip to the Prince’s ball.” Purchase on places like Apple TV or Amazon

CINDERELLA

From 1957, this one has the Roger’s and Hammerstein name attached to its title. It’s a live TV production that features Julie Andrews as the titular character. Fun fact, it also says Andrews received an Emmy nomination for her role in this. cinderella movie adaptations

CINDERELLA

A film from 1965 with Lesley Ann Warren. This followed in the footsteps of the success Julie Andrews’ production and is another live TV title. It also says it’s the more “traditional” of the two. Stream, at publication, on Peacock; Plex and Tubi

THE SLIPPER and the ROSE

A musical version with Richard Chamberlain, this is one from the 1970s that I watched years ago, but don’t think I’ve ever seen again. It’s so old (in my viewing) that the version in my collection is a VHS tape. Stream, at publication, on Freevee or Peacock

CINDERELLA

Before the 2015 live action version, this 1997 film with Brandy was produced. It was a made for TV production that multiple people adore. I saw it years ago, but I cannot remember what I thought of it, though given my enjoyment of fairy tales, I’m sure at the time I thought it was cute. Stream, at publication, on Disney+

EVER AFTER

Drew Barrymore steps into the glass slippers in this version of the fable. In it, she plays a feisty heroine who nearly breaks (in a good way) the stepmother who almost breaks (in a bad way) her. The film is lovely to look at and features Cinderella falling in love with a prince that she gets to know underneath the nose of her stepfamily. A CINDERELLA STORY

A modern “classic,” this 2004 film features Hilary Duff in a story about a teen whose dad passes away and her stepmom upends their lives to redo everything. Giving her some small semblance of normalcy is her online correspondence and friendship with a mysterious guy who may be her soul mate. Purchase on places like Apple or Amazon

CINDERELLA

Set in the 1950s world of fashion, this is a miniseries that was produced around the same time as The Beauty and the Beast miniseries. Stream, at publication, on Prime

CINDERELLA

A kind of remake of their animated film, this one turns the story into live action featuring Lily James in the titular role and Richard Madden as the handsome prince in a role that he greatly impresses my once skeptic self of his casting. Cate Blanchett also plays the stepmother, too. This also has some wicked good costuming. Stream, at publication, on Disney+ or Freeform cinderella movie adaptations
