‘HIGH POTENTIAL’ IS ABC’S NEW CRIME DRAMA
ABC is no stranger to crime dramas. They take on a new one with High Potential.
High Potential (2024) Season One First Impression Review
Working as a night shift cleaner isn’t easy work, but Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) has three kids and responsibilities. One of her gigs is at a police station. During her shift one night, she sees something no one else does. The suspect, she says, is a victim and not a person to be criminalized. Adding a note to the murder board, Morgan doesn’t expect anything to come of this, but when her tip comes to the attention of a police captain (Judy Reyes), she is brought in for questions.
Turns out she has an impressive I.Q. and isn’t ordinary. She sees things everyone else misses.
Her life changes when she gets into a scuffle with the police, the result of which has the captain requesting her help on this case. Much to the reluctance of Morgan and Detective Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), she agrees and through their arguing, the pair set out to solve the murder…
TV SHOW REVIEW | ‘NCIS: SYDNEY,’ SEASON ONE: THE AGENTS GO DOWN UNDER
Crime dramas may not be the thing ABC is known for, but through the years they have done a good one or two, including a fan favorite Castle. While this isn’t, in my opinion, something that is a new playbook, it’s still entertaining. The show, in its final moments, sets up another one of those connective mysteries, and honestly, I’m so bored with these. While stats may say I’m in the minority, I’m much more impressed by shows creating case-of-the-week episodes because I think that’s the type of show that knows how to hook a viewer without complicating incentive.
Despite my kvetching, High Potential is good. Katlin Olson is fabulous, and I appreciate that some of her characterization from The Mick transfers here while she also makes Morgan someone different. She’s responsible, and cares about her kids who she works hard to give a stable life. The sass is also here, too. I also suspect her personality will come into play more and more as the show goes on, preventing her from, as she says, having a stable relationship. Likely there will be sparks flying between her and… someone as the show progresses.
If you’re looking for a new crime drama, I think this one is a grand one to place a bet on. It shows great (yes I’m going to say it) potential. How it sets up and illustrates clues is also about keeping some humor present too, and I love this. In the end, the show is all kinds of fun.
Watch, at publication, the first episode of High Potential on Hulu or find it on ABC.com!
Content: nothing much to note. There is the usual “violence” as the gang tries to solve a crime. We see a body and someone shot (not graphic). There is some discussion about an affair, divorce and someone leaving his kid. The TV-14 rating is pretty much on par with any other crime drama on TV. Note: this is just the first episode so keep that in mind if you try the show.
