‘MISS AUSTEN’ MASTERPIECE SHOW: SEE A STORY ABOUT SISTERS
A new period drama dropping on PBS Masterpiece, Miss Austen is lovely and from all that I see, also something that will be quite bittersweet as well.
Miss Austen (2025) Masterpiece PBS TV Show
A letter bearing sad news sends Cassandra Austen (Keeley Hawes) on a journey where her destination is the bedside of a dying man. Protecting family and keeping the secrets of them is a task she plans to do well. In a rainstorm, Cassandra arrives at the household of former friends.
Many years ago, the Austen sisters knew this family and had many a happy time in their home. Today though, she arrives with purpose which is to protect her sister, Jane (Patsy Feran) who is now gone, and her own emotions. Through these letters which revisit the past, and the present, we learn the secrets of Jane’s life and the connection between these two families.

The latest period drama to make its U.S. home on PBS Masterpiece, Miss Austen is, of course, top notch as a production. As a story, I’m not sure if it will be something that fully enchants me. This because I prefer there to be more light than sorrow, even in historical productions. Irrespective of where this show will go over the next three weeks, I know one thing we can be certain of, this will be an exquisite drama.
LIST | 30+ OF THE POPULAR AND HIGHLY RATED PERIOD DRAMAS: WHERE TO STREAM THEM
This is thanks to those who we don’t see (like the directors or producers), but is largely due to the wonderful performances of the people who play these roles. Not the least of which is Keeley Hawes in the lead role. Hawes is a well known period drama face, and someone I kind of “grew up” watching as a performer. From Dickens to Gaskell, the woman has been in many wonderful productions including being a memorable guest in a Marple episode. There are many other familiar faces in this as well including Rose Leslie.
If you enjoy Austen-esque films or any type of period drama, I have a strong inclination that you’ll wish to give Miss Austen a chance. It’s also ideal for anyone who likes alternate versions or viewpoints on Jane Austen; including something like Becoming Jane. The set up is good and I for one, am curious to see what comes from this stunning new miniseries.
